the transmission in my 86 Eddie fullsize craped out on me last month. I'm just getting around to pulling the tranny and hit only one snag so far, the transfercase won't let go fo the tranny(aod) I've taken all 6 bolts out and all the linkage and speed sensors and crap like that. could the gasket just have kinda bonded to both that good ? I've tried everything I thought would work without damaging the tc . it's all still in the truck . anyone ever have this prob before? ?

Once you remove those 6 bolts, you can try to rotate the t-case slightly to break the gasket loose. I often do that to let the t-case hang straight down, making it easier to pull off the tranny adapter. the other option is to use a come-along and help pull the t-case backfrom the tranny. That's risky with an aluminum/ magnesium housing that could crack. you might also be able to use a floor jack under the t-case to help push it up and break it loose. JSM84

I tried the Jack option and pushed it right into the body and still nothing(I tried this with the tranny mount bolted AND free). the tranny I bought had a transfercase on it and when I unbolted that it pretty much fell apart. I'd like to think of myself as a pretty strong guy and I can't twist it off for the life of me. could the splines have crossed or something somehow? I even tried a ***** driver and hammer between the tc and transmission

It's possible that if the t-case/ tranny had been worked on before that someone used silcone or RTV instead of using the gasket between the t-case and adapter, making it hard to break apart. iwould think about using the come-along method to pull the t-case straight back. I had to do that on my 86 Bronco with the NP208 and NP435 manual. I wrapped a chain around the middle of the t-case in an X-pattern, so as to spread the load a bit.

no worries, dude!!! Wait til you try to remove the Pitman arm from the steering box.

Are you planning to have the AOD rebuilt, or thinking of swapping to something else?
