I read somewhere in this forum a suggestion to put 30wt oil in the transfer case to improve fuel mileage. The manual for an '83 calls for Dexron ll. What's the most common fluid you guys are using in the xfer cases?

I would stick with the auto transmission fluid, or you might be replacing the internal t-case pump real soon.

The 30wt recommendation may have been mine,( pre 77 Bronco with a gear driven t-case.)

Dex II or Dex III is the recommended fluid for a chain drive t-case,

there are of course exceptions to that rule, but they would be mostly for later model products that use synthetics...
