I know this sounds silly, but I have a 1995 Bronco , I bought it from the County where I work, just before I bought it at auction it got a rebuilt jasper trans (E4OD). Ever since I got it , it has this weird problem where if you turn on the parking lights or the headlights while driving it will start shifting real hard and the light on the gear shifter starts flashing, it will reset itself but will eventually do it again. I changed a sensor ( not sure what it is, on the drivers side of the trans, above the pan , I beleive poss. it is the neautral safety swith, or something, it was damaged by a stump) , this sensor has two bolts that hold it to the side of the trans, and if you loosen the bolts it can be adjusted in a spinning kinda mostion Left and right, I was told that this might be a problem as far as the trans shifting funny cause when reinstalled it has to be calibrated or something, but the problems I am having seem to have more to do with when I turn on the lights, it does not happen right away , it takes a few minutes sometimes , but turning the lights on seems to be the common denominator, at least that is the way it seems, I can drive it around all day with no trouble , but pull the headlights on and neck stapping shifts from 1st to second are coming , just varies when ! The trans never slips and there is no other problems, just this weird shifting when the headlights seem to be on, ANY HELP on this would be great, I am at my wits end ! Thanks Larry

check the speedo and see if it drops to 0mph when it starts shifting funny. if so your elec. speed sensor or the drive gear might be bad. that happened in mine. the elec. speed sensor controls the kick down. It is located on the transfer case.

No , There is no changes in the speedo or any gauges for that matter when it starts doing this, and like I said it only seems to do it when I have the headlights on, but I will check it just for the sake of a new idea, Thanks Larry

i had a simular problem with my 95 bronco except it was shutting off my engine when i turned on lights. took it to a few shops before they could figure out what it was. beleive it or not it was just a bad ground wire.

check all of your grounds, because the E4OD is based off of all electrical sensors/components, for say, it might act up when more current is added and not enough ground

This may sound silly but try turning your dash lights all the way down and see what it does. The 92 F150 we have at work was doing all sorts of wierd shift patterns, and we didn't figure it out untill I pulled the speedo out and found the circuit board on the back had melted from the dash light bulbs. Threw the tranny all outta wack believe it or not. Worth thakin a look at if you get stumped.

That really could be a possibility ! This truck used to be a first response vehicle for the EMS service I work for, and I have been told that it even had some problems back then. I was looking around at the grounds when I relized the original ground wire coming up from the wiring harness is not hooked to anything, it is just cut off and tucked down behind and under the battery holder, someone run a new ( real large cable ) from the frame to the negative battery post, should I hook the factory ground into this heavy gauge wire or what ? Thanks Larry

I actually had a ford one time that would not start and was told by a mechanic friend to unhook the headlight switch or change it out, and it worked, so this would not suprise me about the possibility with something over heating, I will check that also , thanks.
