my 89 is shifting funny ,1st gear won't shift unless i run it up to around 2500-3000rpm and compleatly let off the gas, then it will go into 2nd but down around 1000 rpms from here if i hit the gas anymore then a light tap the it shifts back down to 1st,but once 2nd gear passes 2000rpms its fine i can punch it.just wondering what this could be and how to fix this .Thanks

I don't know what tranny you've got...**** they're hard to identify even by pros...but check out this site, which might help:

http://autorepair.about.com/library/faqs/bl206g.htm

or this may be better:

http://www.transmissioncenter.net/PanShapes.htm

I'd sure do a service on it...as it sure can't hurt anything. Try taking it to somebody that can do what is commonly called a "transmission transfusion." They hook a couple of lines to your tranny, and cycle some fresh fluid through it, while they extract the old stuff. This helps get rid of metal shavings and stuff. Then have them do a filter replacement. Whole thing will probably cost you around $200, but it sure beats having your tranny rebuilt...however, sometimes tranny's are just shot and this won't help much. I did this once with a gm turbo-hydramatic, and it helped to hold me over for a month til I could afford a tranny rebuild. If you do have it rebuilt, get a shift kit put in it. It will shift harder, but this insures a positive gear lock-up and, in my opinion, makes a tranny last longer.

is it a 3 speed or a 4 speed, if its an 89 most likelt it is an AOD, and the kickdown cable is what is attatched to your throttle body and controls the transmissions shift patters, it makes it hold out a gear longer the more gas you give it, and makes it downshift when you push the pedal down also, it runs straight back off the throttle body twards the firewall and hangs a bit of a right and goes down to the trans
