I have a local mechanic working on my 96 Bronco and he wants $410-460 to replace my TPS and EGR Valve. He also says its three parts. The EGR Valve, a positioning sensor and the TPS...I dont believe him, can someone help me out here?

The egr is a simple swap, if you let him do it and he breaks the egr tube, it will cost you another 160.00 do it yourself its easy. the tps sensor is under the throttle body. I took mine off and cleaned it up, very easy to do.

Yeah, its a real simple task to do. I can't imagine it costing that much to do. If you decide to do it yourself, there are plenty of people on here that can help if you have any questions.

But is what he saying to me true? From what I understand the TPS is the Throttle Position Sensor and is one unit, and the EGR is one unit. So by my math, and I am in the military, but that only adds up to 2 not 3...am I wrong here??

it's mostlikely just the egr posion sensor and not the valve. just do the tps and the egr sensor only. the valve would cause the engine to run ruff and want to stall at idle. what are your symptoms to require these to be replaced??

Neither job is terribly difficult I say get a Haynes or Chiltons manual and do it yourself. Nothing like the satisfaction of driving around in something you fixed yourself. Plus, being in the military myself, I can tell you that if you are going to a mechanic within 20 miles of a military installation or (God forbid) an AAFES mechanic, and they know you are military, you will not get your money's worth.

Man, I almost forgot to mention, nearly every military post, has an Auto Craft Shop run by MWR. There, they will have all the tools you need and a tech person who can walk you through step by step. They will charge you a buck or two an hour for the use of a bay or lift. You should check that out.

Go around your military base and look around, you'll see someone tinkering with their cars, maybe they'll be willing to help. I'm in the military too and I have everyone and their dog asking me for help. When GM is charging $1300 for an intake swap on a 3.8 (I think that's the size motor) they like to offer me about $400 and it's quick and easy cash for me... just my $.02

I changed my EGR valve...and was surprised at the $120 price tag....but it was easy. I also cleaned out the tube...but that was easy because I had the intake plenum off. Take off your EGR valve, clean it up with B12, clean the tube with B12. Take off the throttle body (not really that hard, but you will need to replace the gasket afterwards) and take the TPS sensor off the bottom. Clean it up, clean up the throttle body. Whole task: $20 in B12 and gasket and gasket sealant. Time: Two hours disassembly and reassembly....few minutes cleaning crap up. Difficulty: Easier than forking over $500.
