This isnt about what kind of tire I should get or anything like that. This is a little different.

A few years back I started subscribing to 4X4 magazines. I noticed in a few of them people would send in photos of their rides and they'd list all the goodies the truck had. I saw quite a few of them that had particular brand/type tire on the front and something else on the back. I've not seen this so much anymore and can't seem to dig up any of the mags I saw this in now that I've 3 times. I know I still have them though.

My question is this: Why would someone do this? I guess I have my ideas why they might, but my ideas sometimes are not normal ( ) so I figured I'd get other opinions. Or did I perhaps dream this up?

To clarify, I don't mean different width tires or size tires. I mean like Boggers on the back and Grapplers on the front. That kind of different.

Maybe its a money thing. When I was a teenager, I had a '76 Pinto (yes I'm that old) that I would spin the tires every chance I got to impress the girls or whatnot (yes I know now that I was not impressing anyone in a Pinto). Being a broke teenager, I could never afford 4 tires at once, so I would by 2 cheap ones for the rear end.

because your rear tires and your front tires do different things and have forces act on them differently. You want your front tires to steer you, so boggers wouldn't be the best because they are almost exclusively lateral bars, making them great rear tires since the majority of the rear tires job is just to push. Tires like the bogger are great for mud and great for sliding the back end around in a circle since there isn't much to stop if from doing so. Makes less of an impact on a 4wd but think of a sand dune rig, they have paddles in the rear and tires with just one ridge in the front so they can turn. I want to keep my BFG MTs up front and put the 33x14 boggers in the rear.

Broncosaurus: I kind of had that idea. Today I was noticing on our farm tractor the wheel situation. It was about 30F outside, raining. My feet were wet. I was up to the top of my boots in mud. And I don't mean mud mud. I mean that special kind of mud that only a herd of cows averaging around 1500lbs can make. Dad was bringing hay out of the stockpile and feeding it out. As he was coming thru said mud I noticed that he didnt have ANY trouble turning to make a sharp left thru a gate. When we got back to the HQ, he was on another tractor and it would slide everytime he tried to make a turn in the same type of mud. When he drove back up to the shop, I was looking at the tires. That tractor has regular street tires on the front. The one at the other pasture has those type with one big rib running right down the middle. That kind of got me to thinking about this some more.

So your theory makes perfect sense. The wheels on the back have a different purpose than the front. And that really matters in 4wd situations. Or rather, it CAN matter. It all depends on what you're doing I guess.

I was just curious and thanks for y'alls input.

I've seen that quite a bit on the more serious rigs, they have something like Swamper TSL's or SSR's up front and Boggers out back. Never really put much thought into it, figured they were just testing theories or something. But that makes perfect sense with the steering issue and whatnot.

Also I noticed on Ian and Jessies jeep they had the Boggers on backwards? Think that was done on purpose? (From extreme 4x4)

On one of the episodes where they were building it (the jeep) they said something about a better bite but seems to me that being backwards would make the treads not clean themselves out.

Yeah I've seen people run the bajaclaws backwards too. I can see a difference between mud and rock and how you want them to bite and if you want the edges to grab first or whatever.

Have you seen the episodes in which she had a couple wardrobe malfuctions. One I saw was a nip slip, they fuzzed it out but still thought it was funny. The other was excessive butt cleavage, her pants were down at least half of her cheeks, they fuzzed that out even, that was dumb, its only an ass.

The show is "Xtreme 4X4" on SpikeTV Saturday and Sunday mornings. When I left the states 6 months ago, it was the third show in the Power Block. Find out more here:

By the way, I think a good looking woman who can wheel and fix what she breaks is HOT even if she is a "little chucky".
