Ive got a 91 Bronco with a 302, and shes getting tired. I recently rebuilt the E4OD tranny, transfer case, and the 8.8 rear end. I was wondering about some cheap options for an engine swap. I would like more power, maybe a 351. How hard is the swap to a 351? What about ditching the efi, and installing a carb? Would a stock 351 give me enough power? Could I run my efi on a 351? I wouldnt mind building the 302 thats in there with some performance parts, but I definately want to remove the fuel injection and throw a 4bbl up there. Shes my daily driver, and I wouldnt have it any other way. I dont want anything too crazy, I just want more power so she doesnt feel so sluggish.

Maybe a gear swap is your best option. If your interested in the engine upgrading still, sit down and figure out what you have to spend. That rules all. If you want to post your budget of what you acyually have to spend then let us know and we can spend the money very easily for you. Everyone of us are big Bronco dreamers so this will be very easy for us

Unfortunately,if you want to swap your EFI for a 4bbl,your going to be doing some head swapping. The EFI has smaller heads which makes for a larger intake. The 351w swap is simple and very affective only needing to watch for exhaust clearance.I recently built and installed a 306cid stroker, which is specifically designed for 302 EFI.In all, with some matching here and there,I have about $800.00 in new parts and about $700.00 in head ,block machining and balancing. It might sound small, but its a rev to the moon torque MONSTER.Theres also the 309,347and 393 strokers for the 302,but,theyre a little pocket heavy.

Pssst pinson, you do not have to swap heads on a 302 to put a carbed intake on it, it is a direct swap. You will however have to modify your fuel delivery and ignition systems. Easiest way to make it work in my opinion would be get a complete MSD ignition. As for the fuel I am not sure if you can use your existing electric fuel pump, I am unsure how you would connect the fuel lines.

Sorry,my bad,but for the fuel, the current system will work with a Holley Blue fuel regulator.

How do you connect the fuel line to that regulator, does it have the same fitting?

True that! How much do we have to play with! I vote for a crate 460 from Ford's performance division, they are ridiculously cheap as far as crate motors go.

I only run 33'' bfgs as of now. I have about two grand to throw, and the motor is the only thing I havent yet rebuilt. it has 192,000 miles on it. She still runs excellent, but I figured if I was going to spend the money, might as well get what I want now, versus going big later and spending twice the money. I would like a 4'' lift and about 36'' tires with 12 inch wide wheels. I will regear then of course, maybe some dana 60's front and rear. I just want a motor with enough ass to push it when its done, and have enough power left over to still be peppy. Im not skilled enough to convert to a big block (my buddy says im scared) but that seems like a pretty ******** surgery, and I dont want to ***** it up. Im happy with a smallblock, my hardest project will be the axles, Im not very fond of the IFS. Im helpless there, but my buddy says he'll help out.

Bore out a 351 and put some high compression pistons in and get some ford GT40 heads, a good high flowing manifold and carb

I agree with Broncosaurus. The 351 could be made pretty sweet fairly easy and you wouldnt have the weight issues like you would with a 460.

As for the strokers, I don't know enough about them to comment.

Youll have to find a high pressure adapter, perhaps Summit Racing?I know theyre made,I just dont know who.

I totally agree,but with the 460,kiss that E4OD goodbye.

I recently swapped my IFS for a '78D44 straight axle and the rear 8.8 for a 9".It was pretty simple. With the D60,are you going with the arms or the leafs? In either case I can send some conv.pics.

I havent really looked into the front end a whole lot just yet, Im trying to do one thing at a time. The ol' Lady says I dump too much money in the Bronco as it is. She doesnt get it, but she sure loves riding in it though. Would the E4OD be sufficient with a bored out 351? Maybe with a shift kit? I really wouldnt need DANA 60's for 36'' tires so I may just do a straight axel Dana 44 like Pinson says. I love driving this truck everyday, and I want it to be as streetable as on the trail.

Good bye to the E4OD with a carb anyway, it needs the engines computer to know whats up get the 351 and do what you want to it THEN go to the junkyard for the computer and maybe fuel rail?

The E4OD should hold up fine with a lightly modded 351 hooked to it. Definately invest in a tranny cooler though if it doesn't already have one installed!

Yeah I suggested boreing it because as far as I know stroker kits are real expensive, and that 2 grand will be gone so fast it will make your head spin.

Looks like the big issue is the E40 and carb issue, if you just rebuilt the E40, do you really want to ditch it so soon fto be able to put in a new motor and have a carb?
