So I just picked up a '96 Bronco with a check engine light and poor runnability (sometimes stalls in gear with A/C on, and its 98 today). I tried to pull the codes, but found it to be an OBD I. Except there is no self-test wire. The 6-pin connector is right where it's supposed to be, but no 1-pin connector. And the hole for it in the EEC Test holder is dirty like it hasn't been there for a long time. I have inspected all of the loose-hanging connectors nearby and have looked for a cut wire, but it still hasn't turned up.

Suggestions?

Laughter?

Tears?

Anything?

How about laughter?

The '96 should be a OBDII system with the single connector under the dash, driver's side.

You can't self test OBDII and flash codes to the dash, you must use a code reader.

OK... on second thought, perhaps you have an early '96, and they didn't make the changeover yet, when they built your bronco. So... does the connector look like this?

IF you follow the wiring of the larger connector down the harness about four inches you should find the wiring of the STI.

Very well versed on the difference between OBD I & II. The larger connector is present, but no STI. I ripped the wire protector back until it meets the larger bundle and the only wires in the area are a blk & a blk/blu that connect together on a ground *****.

There are 2 loose/nonconnected plugs in the area, but neither are the STI (one is completely wrong and the other has 2 tiny pins, very much unlike the STI). It just isn't there. Where does the STI wire lead so I can back trace it from the source?

According to my wiring diagram, the wire should be white/purple and go directly to the PCM at pin number 48.

I am also missing the STI wire on my 1988 Bronco. I kinda gave up on it, but now I have a ABS light on and now that needs my attention. Best fix.. Duct tape the light haha j/k but seriously it would work. Let me know what happens.

Solution, look under the glove compartment for the OBD II connector. The brainiacs at Ford decided they would be the only ones on the planet to put it over there instead of where it belongs. I understand the OBD II system well enough, just not why Ford would make that decision (among others).

Ha.. go figure. They are supposed to have a sticker where it is supposed to be, to tell you where to look for it.

Glad you found it.. it was a learning experience for me.

I didn't even have a chance to trace the wire back from the PCM like we had discussed. I don't know what I would have done if I got there and there was no wire in that slot to trace. :lol: I ended up finding on it some picture on ALLData when I was looking up wiring diagrams for the tailgate window motor (which I never found). :huh: What's even better is all I had to do to repair the code was replace the air filter. All of that mess and I would have made the repair anyway when I did the oil change that afternoon. :rolleyes: That's why I turned my wrenches in for a table saw. :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Regarding the tailgate, there are a number of threads here on the tailgate.
