it should just be held in with the yellow plastic rod clips like the ones used on the door key and latch mechanism in your drivers and passenger door, push the yellow clip off the body of the release rods then pull the rods out and they should separate.

if you're still unsure, send us a picture of your tailgate innards and we can be a little more specific.

If you are talking about this part http://broncograveyard.com/bronco/i-34520-tailgate-handle-release-assy-.html , replace it. If it is the latch parts that are bending, remove them and soak them in Rust Mort over night and then lubricate before replacing them in the tail gate. That is if the part that is bending is still sound. Otherwise try to get them from a junkyard and recondition them before installing them in the tail gate. You can find the right latch on the JBG site on the same page s the part above. However it seems that left latches are more difficult to find new, don't know why.

Putting a chain on them will only prolong the agony of having to do the job right.

Good luck,

:)>-

I would remove and clean/ grease both tailgate latches, if the mechanism is bending out of the box then something is wrong and its not the mechanism.

yo,

I agree w/Krafty on latch R&R and ****

also;

center-interlock.jpg

The numbers show the sequence of events for PROPER operation of the inside latch handle. 5 & 6 should be simultaneous, and the long rods can be bent to take up any slack & get the latches to open at the same moment. But do so only AFTER aligning the tailgate.

More tg info LINKS in my site @ http://www.broncolinks.com/index.php?index=478

such as;

Lubrication from Bronco Workshop Manual; "...Use Silicone Lubricant C0AZ-19553-AA (jelly) and D7AZ-19553-AA (spray) or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M13P4-A on the tg, door and window weatherstrips whenever necessary. Silicone lubricant helps avoid weatherstrip squeaks and retards excess weatherstrip wear from chafing between the door glass upper frame and the weatherstrip. It also helps to retain door window alignment by reducing friction between the glass frame and the rubber weatherstrip. Use Multi-Purpose Grease Spray D7AZ-19584-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specifications ESR-M1C159-A and ESB-M1C106-B to lubricate door and tailgate hinges. Apply an even coat to all hinge pivot points as outlined in the maintenance schedules or when a binding or squeaking condition occurs..." miesk5 Note, Use PTFE grease for slides & tracks. Use silicone spray on the weatherbelts & glass run; stest the silicone on a regular styrofoam cup first; if the cup gets funky or melts, then the can or tube contans oil, a regular occurrence now, esp if from China
