I was just wondering if anyone runs a synthetic oil in their Bronco? I keep hearing wonderful things about it, but am a bit hesitant to try something new, like my dad always said: "If it isn't broken, don't F**K with it!!!" I was also wondering, do you need to do anything special when you drain out the old oil or is it pretty much business as usual, drain fill etc... Any comments would be appreciated, thanks B-Cack

I don't run synthetic in my 84 as the motor is not fully broken in yet (under 10K mi), but I do use QS4X4 syn.-blend in my 98. If your motor has high mileage, like over 100K or has any leaks, I would not start using synthetic as it will leak easier than conventional oil. If your motor is in good shape with no leaks and mileage under 100K, a full synthetic like Mobil 1 is worth the extra cost. You can get a "high mileage" synthetic, too. But if you're using a quart per 2000 miles, it can cost you more to run the full synthetics. My$0.02!

I would try the QS4x4 or HiMileage instead of the more expensive Mobil 1. You can switch back to regular oil at the next change if you notcie more leaks. Just don't use Pennzoil!!!

I use full synthetic in my truck and have used it in every vehicle I have owned.

JSM is right about the leak issues, if you have any no mater how small don't use it.

Why not Penzoil? I have used the regular stuff for years, is their synthetic just crap or what?

Actually I have always been told that all Penzoil is crap. My high school shop teacher said he once overhauled a motor that had used only Penzoil and the sludge in the motor was as thick as glue. I use only Havoline 10w-40 in everything and have put over 100K on everything I have ever owned! Just my 2 cents, though. Good luck,

I have also seen the terrible sludge build-up from the regular P. oil in a few previous motors. I have not tried their synthetic, if they have one. I'm still mad.

when i got out of high school i started working in a quick **** place and they had no penz in the shop for that reason the owner would tell people to go get it else where and we would put it in but he couldn't sell them something that would hurt there motors so much

I run quakerstate 4x4 in my 92 and haven't noticed anymore leaks than the conventional stuff its still running strong with 170,000 on the 302. It'd be dead already if i used pennzoil.

I switched my truck over at 140K to synthetic blend. This is still a good product and helps the seals that are used to regular oil. That is what I have heard and foud myself

I use AMSOIL in all my vehicles, partially because I'm an AMSOIL dealer (small time). AMSOIL is the first in synthetics. They have a wide range of oils to best suite your vehicle. If you would like further info about AMSOIL I would be glad to help. My dealer number is 1292954 or go to www.amsoil.com and check it out for yourself. Since I've changed over I have increased my gas mileage by 4 gallons. This can range anywhere from 3 to 7 mpg.

Gump_Black,

I had never heard of AMSOIL until 2 years ago, but it has been around since 1972. It is big up in the Northwest. AMSOIL does not advertise like convential oils, they leave that up to their Dealers. I started as a perferred customer than became a dealer. I sell mainly to friends and family right now. I like the prices as a dealer. If you plan to use AMSOIL in more than one vehicle I suggest being a Perferred Customer to save money. If you find friends or family that want to use AMSOIL than upgrade to a Dealer status. It will be worth it in the money you will save.

There is not much difference in the oils other than the weight, if your vehicle has over 75,000 miles use the XL-7500. It's a 7,500 mile 6month oil change program for high miles. That is what I use in my bronco with 155,000 miles. I have a 2004 Jeep liberty that the wife drives and I use the series 2000 0W-30, with an AMSOIL filter in both. series 2000 is good for 35,000 or one year. I have my oil analyzed before I change it, if it comes back good I continue to use it for another 35,000 or one year. The same for the Bronco. I would also suggest that you use the engine flush to clean your engine out, I did in both vehicles. I will be change my bronco over to full synthetic for all of the drivetrain. Right now its just the engine oil. I buy the oils and filter for a year, 6 quarts and two filters. AMSOIL filters filter down to 3 to 5 microns and are good for 12,500 miles or 6months, most other filter filter to 20 microns only and need to be change at 3,000 or 3months. In the long run you can save about $50 a year not to include the better mpg. Hope that helps you out if you have further questions I'll PM you my email address.
