Ok so Ford decided to be extremely smart and put some m2 mazda transmission in the bronco and f150. This didn't bother me untill I started doing engine upgrades and now I think my tranny is starting to yell at me. How can I tell if a stantard tranny is going out? If it is going out I don't want to have it rebuilt or get the same one, I want a beefier one but I don't know what all stantard trannys with 4wheel drive with mate up to my 302 "1996" by the way. So any help would be GREATLY appretiated

Zak

I think Motive Gear has a tech page on the Ford tranny options, such as the ZF models. While most manual tranny problems may be due to a worn clutch or pilot bearing, I do agree that the Mazda 5-sp can be a POS. When mine went out in my old Ranger pick-up, it would lock up between 2nd & 3rd gear.

There are many ways to tell if your tranny is going out. What is it doing? I need more info and maybe I can help you trouble shoot it.

Well if I'm in 4 low and I'm spinning the tires I push in the clutch, when I push in the clutch the gears sound like they're knocking back and forth. Sometimes when I'm driving down a bumpy road it simply slides out of third gear on it's own. When I accelerate and then let off the gas the tranny seems to have a lot of slop in between gears. I know it's not the clutch because I just replaced everything in my clutch region.

HHMMMM maybe it's always been like this and I just havn't noticed.

First off I would check your shift linkage and make sure nothing is out of alignment. Next I would make sure the tranny is not loose or misaligned. If those are OK there are alot of other stuff that could be causing it. Any who here is a list of posibilites:

1. excessive end play of input shaft

2. worn or broke synchronizer

3. bad front case bearing

4. worn shift forks

Was it doing this before you changed your clutch or did it start after? When you are not moving is there any bearing noises when the clutch is pushed in? Any with clutch out and in nuetral? Any noise when your are moving and in any gear to include nuetral? As for " the gears sound like they're knocking back and forth" Does it only do it in fore low? If so could be a transfer case problem. Does it sound like a clack or a clunk? If you can tell me the answers to these question I can narrow it down more. You never know it could be a simple fix. Definently check the simple stuff first.

Just to update my post, the tech link on Motive gear is no longer there. Try Novak Enterprises ( www.novak-adapt.com )

could just be some play in driveline ie.. rear end. mine has some play in it and when i get on and off the gas their is slop in the driveline, so their is some knocking noises.
