Stumped

My bronco just stopped running one day and I haven't been able to get it started again. I've got good fuel presure, good spark on all 8 cyl, good compession on all 8, new computer, tune-up, new coil, new egr, timing is correct, did electical tests on everything I can think of, new fuel filter, and checked both fuel pumps. Used one of those code readers and all it came up with is the power steering pressure switch, laughable crap. It will turn over but won't start.

Help is much need and appicated.

I wouldn't laugh too hard :lol: . I don't have the EVTM for your truck, but I wouldn't find it unlikely that a switch by that name wouldn't be used to prevent starting. Even though you might be able to steer with low pressure, Ford might think it unsafe and not allow the engine to start. Have you checked the switch? Why not try bypassing it to see if your truck will start. If it does, fix the problem before driving it. Either the switch could be bad or it is realy trying to save your life due to low steering pressure.

Flooded? If it is carburated try flooring it and starting it at the same time, not exactly great for the truck, but hey, if it gets her going. Also, did you try starter fluid? I am thinking that he 86 was not efi. If it was, try unhooking your map sensor if it has one. I know I say this often, but it works for me...if you have one I think it is on the firewall on the passenger side. It is black and about one and a half inches wide. Sorry to give you easy things, but this is all that I can think of.

Did you check the ignition module(TFI) on the distributor?

ignition module(TFI) is brand new and tested. It's good.

Are you getting any "firing" at all? (pops, farts, mis fires, backfires)

What is the mileage/ history of the truck, could the timing chain have jumped one or two teeth?

When you checked the fuel pressure, did you "jump" the pump wiring, or just use the key on prime pressure as your reading? Have you tested/ re-set the inertia switch?

TYou say the timing is correct, but is the timing chain still on, if you jump/ break the chain, it'll never start

As for it firing I get a misfire every once in a while. And when I say timing is correct, I pulled off the timing chain cover to make sure the chain didn't jump or brake. I also got the # 1 clynder at tdc and made sure the bug was facing the right way and the distibutor was facing the right way as it says in the Haynes book. I also went through the truck with a multi meter to look for shorts and didn't find any. I checked the fuel presure both ways. the inertia switch is good, I've tested it three different times.

Hey man I know you're ready to pull your hair out and I know this sounds stupid but I thought I read that the plugs had fouled out. If they have try replacing them and verifying correct gap and try again. Leave the distributor loose and turn it over at the solinoid making sure the key is on that way the timing can be changed while cranking it. Sometimes Fords can be picky but let me know if that helps.

Hmm.. sounds like a similar problem I had on my T/A.

The positive battery cable had a smaller wire going to a fusible link that supplied power to the ECM.

This cable, although appeared fine, was seperated on the inside, just enough that during a no run, switch on check of power, everything read fine.

Under the load of starting, it would heat up andd seperate, killing the power to the ECM, not letting it start.

Had me stumped for a day or two and I finally towed it to a dealer where they found it by accident. /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> before then, they were scratching their heads as well.

Did you check your fuel pump relay switch in the fuse box under the hood? If that doesnt work check your map sensor. But I am not sure what year your bronco is.

Hello That powersteering pressure switch is important when it senses the pressure go up it causes the computer to advance the timing so the motor doesnt lug down . I dont think that it was one of fords better ideas but they did it. I have one on my 89 and it was leaking fluid through the switch the diaphragm must have gave it up but it was causing it to idle all stupid and after i replaced it it was ok . if you hav'nt figured it out by now one more idea pull the distributor and check that the roll pin in gear has'nt sheared hold gear in one hand turn rotor oppisite way also take small punch try to remove roll pin if it starts out not broke

If as you say, you have fuel, spark and air," I'm guessin you dont have a blockage in your intake" and all this happens at the correct time it has to run. Maby check your ignition switch. see if you lose power when the key moves from the start position to the run position Good luck dude. Got hand grenades?? :wacko:
