I'm pushing the 200K mark on my 96 .. I have a spare roller 5.8 to build for it .. The truck has the typical 3.55 gears and 31X10.5's on it .. I don't do much towing anymore and don't expect to in the future (NO More Boats) ..

I also have a 302 GT cam and a set of GT40 heads I could put on the build .. I'm looking for some ideas for which way to go to make the truck better on the hiway as far as performance and maybe economy

Hey Racer,

I hear ya...The Beast a (96 also) is pushing 190K. But I get 15-17 MPG with a stock 5.0. 285/60/18 nexens.

Save the Gt cam and heads for something lighter that can really take advantage of it. Build the 5.8. Make the truck as light as you can and still use it for what you need, and you should be happy with the results. I use The Beast mainly on the highway now as well and cruise at 70mph at 2K rpm. If I keep it at or below the 2k I get about 17 to maybe 17.6 mpg. The ride is smooth and relativly quiet.

Good Luck

As RON advised.

But, if you have that "itch" to modify and have a few $: Look at;

I know that insulating the stock Air Intake tube(s) and filter housing (some ref to it as the box) helps a lot!

EXCERPTS;

"... Over the course of 1 year, I've been gathering and researching what I need to convert my FSB to a GT40 style intake. I've been gathering pieces for this conversion going back to around the end of 2007.

I Originally installed GT40 heads and wanted to rid the truck style intake in favor for the car style. You have a lot of options with using the car style vrs the truck twin throttle-plate body.

details

My upper and lower came off a 1995 Explorer. That was T-boned in a accident. 19lb/phr Injectors came from a 1996 Explorer, and the fuel rail is off a 1999 model with no return, in lew of the FSB truck.

NOTE: After thinking about my UPPER being placed point to the driverside fender, I might go back to the truck style due to ease of getting to the FPR. ( explorer and mustang style are on the right side vrs our trucks are on the left side.

Throttle body, is that of a 65mm Mustang with mustang EGR spacer. EGR-valve was off a Explorer.

Heads are off, what I think was 1995 explorer.

Gaskets where that of Felpro from the upper block overhaul kit and a 1250 intake gasket that I had sitting on the bench.
