been a while....

i've always noticed while trying to turn the wheel the pump squeaks and has plenty of fluid, plus the wheel jumps, i.e. turning like the agitator of a washing machine. it does this when sitting still and at speeds under 10-ish mph. even tried pressing the gas while turning the wheel sitting still, same thing. but at speeds above 10-ish it works fine. i had thought that with my old tires it had more suface contact due to them almost being bald. but i have new 33 12.5 15 tires all around. its funny one of my co-workers camero does the same thing and it's around the same age. has anyone heard or ran in to this problem before?

Replace/tighten the belt. It takes a **** of alot less effort to turn those wheels while moving than it does when sitting still. If the belt is slightly loose, it will squeel and make the steering jump. ESPECIALLY with large tires.

with the large tires and the original sized pump, will there be excessive stress put on to the steering system than what it can take?

there was one more thing to add and ask: the tilt wheel, how do you repair that? i managed to move it up from all the way down but i had to use a long flat head to unlock it. it also is causing the turn signals not to turn off when the wheel is returning to it's normal position.

You go to the junkyard and buy a good replacement column. They CAN be repaired but you don't want to get into that, it's like trying to fix a watch. Just replace the thing and spend time w/your family instead.

You can upgrade the pump to the stronger Saginaw PS pump & that will help.

well dont mean to steal ur thread but its related. today it rained and there is a street that gets flooded pretty good and i went through the water and i noticed the steering wheel ****** and when i would turn it it was binding up and squeeling alot then it got stuck. as i was forcing it little by little it started turning more and more. then it was like nothing had happend it was easy to turn and everything. so i was thinking the belt got wet but i went through some more water and it didnt do that anymore. any ideas.

oh and when i hit my max from side to side it squeeals really loudly. but this was happening since i got it

Ck the fluid level in the pump & the belt tension. If it keeps doing this when wet even after adjusting the tension you might try some belt dressing to increase the belts grip.
