Okay....I have successfully removed the steering wheel with a Steering Wheel Puller tool. Now I thought the shroud covers would easily be removed...but NO. I removed the turn signal handle, I have not removed the gear shift handle (do I just punch out the pin with hammer?) I have removed 3 allen wrench screws from back of gear shift shroud, I began to dismantle the inside of horn/cruise control wiring...to get behind them. I am at a loss....

I am trying to get to the actuator rod under the steering column shroud...that connects to the Ignition Cylinder. It is broken and loose and does not connect when Key is engaged and turned.

I do not have tilt steering wheel. Its a 1984 Bronco XLT...

Any help on removing the shroud cover would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Thank you.....

Adam's link is for the tilt column. The non-tilt column is different. I would suggest that you first take out the key cylinder to see if you wrung off the shaft attached to the cylinder that engages the gear that moves the rod. When the grease becomes stiff with cold, it is possible to turn with enough force to break one of the parts behind the key. Picture 7 shows the hole that the flattened shaft goes into. What you see is a bearing in front of the gear. The gear works a toothed rack attached to the rod.

To remove the cylinder on your non-tilt column you need to turn the key to the on position and insert a stiff wire into the hole inside the trim piece, not outside like shown for the tilt version. The steering wheel must be removed on the non tilt version to get to the cylinder hole. If you wrung off the shaft, a new cylinder should fix the problem.

PS Before you replace the cylinder, spray some thin oil in and around the shaft hole, insert and work the cylinder to mix the thin oil into the thick grease. I found this to reduce the turning effort on cold mornings.

I assume that you figured out how to remove the shroud. If not, when you remove the ***** in the bottom of the shroud, you sort of have to spread and twist whle pulling upward, kinda hard to describe the motion. You don't need to remove the signal or shift levers to get it off. It is just a PITA. Be careful not to catch on the tread that hooks the shift to the indicator. Looks like a good post Adam Dude pointed you to. In your other post on the subject I asked you which column you have. The procedures are different for the two. The cylinder release is in a different location depending on which column you have.

Also, only post in one forum for a particular problem.

Good luck,

:)>-
