I went to start my 1990 bronco and the starter got stuck on I had to disconnect the power from the battery to get the starter to quit now when I hook the power wire up the starter automatically starts cranking the motor...mind you the key is in the off position......

Pull the small red with blue stripe wire off the solinoid and see if it still cranks. If so, the starter solinoid contacts are probably welded together.

Good luck,

:)>-

Change out the starter. About a 30 minute job. Will solve your problem.

I've got a similar problem. Every now and then, The gear won't kick back in...it stays on the flywheel and constantly turns. Even if you turn the key off, the engine still runs. I usually just turn the key over a few times and it disengages. I know I'll have to replace it soon. Old Broncos don't die...but they do require a lot of money.

Replace the starter solenoid, mine did that, so I replaced both the starter and solenoid, its a good thing to replace both at the same time.

Yes, I figured I'd do both. Wonder why it does that though. It just happens every now and then. Any ideas?

On 2vehicles I have had the same problem. But I was able to fix it one time by just lubricating the the rod that extends from the starter (I believe it is called a bendix, but don't quote me).

Help, I'm having the same problem on my 87 Ford Bronco. I'm seriously ready to sell it. It's never had this problem but it's now where it just sits and I won't drive it because every other time I crank it, the starter sticks. I'm put in a brand new starter and 2 solenoids. The battery is fully charged. I even took it to a shop. they put on a new solenoid, said mine may have been bad from autozone. It worked fine for a day, then started sticking again. I went back to the shop. They told me run another ground from the solenoid. I did that. It worked for an entire day. I thought it was fixed, then it stuck again. what else do I do???

When all else fails, open the inspection plate and take a look at the flywheel, I heard that if there are burrs on the teeth, that will sometimes prevent the starter from disengaging.

if it's not the starter and not the relay then try the ignition switch......the slide mechanism has a grease in it, metal flakes from wear of the copper elements get into the grease . sometimes wipes away sometimes dosn't. or your batery has to much juice and is over powering the parts , causing welding or sticking as mentioned before. mine did that once.....wore the baterie to nil.....even after i pulled the ign. wire, but only that once. i have a smart start interlock,so i just blame it. the first part just sounded good....don't know for sure.

try adjusting the ignition switch down on the column. had a 91 f250 with this problem a couple of months back. replace starter solenoid and swithc. finally adjusted switch so rod would nt stick and it fixed it.

My truck did the same thing. It turned out to be a wire right outside the firewall that was shorting out, causing my starter to run continuously. It wasn't my solenoid, but definetly check it. I also had to replace my starter, as most of the teeth were ground off. But after the wire was fixed, she runs like a charm :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> Good luck!

Yo rpys,

WELCOME!

 What year do you have?

This is from Ford for  93; similar to  92-96 Broncos;

NOTE that the compact Permanent Magnet Gear Reduction  (PMGR) is used in 92-96 Broncos

  • Starter remains engaged and runs with engine.
  • Battery cable touching solenoid "S" terminal (worn or mispositioned cable).
  • Replace or relocate cable and replace starter.

  • Inoperative starter.
  • Replace starter. See removal and installation procedure.

  • Starter relay remains engaged.

Runs On after the switch is released; This situation develops when the ignition terminal on the starter is “jumpered” to the battery terminal on the starter and a remote solenoid is used. Permanent magnet starters can actually produce power if they are driven from an outside source (i.e. the starter will act like an alternator once the engine fires and starts spinning). The current produced in the starter for this second or so will flow from the starter’s battery terminal to the starter’s ignition terminal and hold the solenoid in. This will cause the one to two second delay in the solenoid release and an irritating noise. The solution is to wire the starter per the instruction sheet, which will ensure that the ignition switch terminal goes dead the instance the key is released.
