Specs first:

1980

451m

Ok, I was out the other day finding puddles and went out to the river. I climed down into the river bottom and went accross. Well on the other side there was a pretty steep incline. I would say between 70 and 75% or more, never was very good at that.

Anyway the first time I attempeted to get up the incline I was going to take it kind of easy so though not slow not really fast either (remember ex-camero driver 0:) ) anyway the darn thing stalled half way up. So I let it roll back down (the incline was little longer than the truck itself).

I then backed up a little to get a running start at it and I made it up to where my front tires were at the top of the embankment and it stalled again. Hit the breaks and restarted it again and finished the climb.

Why did it stall and what do I need to do to keep it from happening again?

My guess is that i starved the carb and that is why it stalled. But, it was not like I was on that incline very long maybe 5 seconds at best.

If I did starve the carb however, my guess for a solution would be an aftermarket fuel pump. Is there a cheeper fix that would be just as safe?

Again, Im willing to fix anything or at least learn and then fix but i

Im not good at the whole diagnosis thing yet.

Any advice you could give would be appreicated. I would hate to be on a real hill and have that happen. [-o<

Thanks,

yeah it sounds like you starved the carb. but honestly i dont have alot of expierence wheeling with a carb'd vehicle. even though mine is carb'd i havent wheeled it yet and over the past few months i've been thinking about going with a fuel injected 5.8. anyway to answer your question... if it is your carb starving for fuel it's probably not your fuel pump, well depending on how much gas you have in your tank anyway.. when a carb starves for fuel it means it starves inside your carb bowl. holley makes a truck avanger carb designed for steeper angels (sp) i think edelbrok may also make one. you can probably find out more info at the holley or edelbrok website. either of these would solve your problem to a point depending on what angles(sp) you will be wheeling. good luck

Right, that's just the 'nature of the beast' with most carburetors stalling on inclines. You can hopefully make it up a hill and over the top with enough momentum, stalling and rolling backwards can be real dangerous! Traveling sideways or a left/right incline is even worse. The Holley Truck Avenger carb has a vent system to help with the stalling problem, may be something to look into for about $450.

Not sure of the feasability in the states. we find propane to work well as you are injecting a gas insttead of having a liquid sloshing around. The added plus is it's cheap to run too! :)>-

Thanks, I have an edelbrock carb but I don't think it is the one you are talking about. I would like to hear more on the propane idea tho.

Naw, if your truck runs fine otherwise...it's not "starving" for fuel...it's more-likely flooding. Fuel spilling into the intake. (large angle= spill-over, just like tiping a water glass) I believe Edlebrock has an inexpensive kit to solve that problem.

Lady Tigger, you might be able to adjust the float level on the carb for your 351M. Try some searching on the Edelbrock model you have, it may be the 1400 series. You could try different internal parts to fine-tune the carb for offroading.

Propane is an option, but has some side effects. It can be ******* valve guides, and a little hard to find in some places. My 85 K10 was run on propane for a long time. IT used to be a really cheap fuel source, too.

it is stalling because all of the fuel is going to the back bowl....and check ur float levels because they could be off
