You'd have an E4OD trans. Your engine and trans are computer controlled. One can pull diagnostic trouble shooting codes from your onboard computer, without any sofisticated equipment. Here's how.

How to scan FORD on board Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) in your driveway

Howto Pull Codes 1983-1995 Broncos, Mustang, F series Trucks, Econolines, 302, 351 and more

Also your idle should be about 660. If it is much higher it will shift hard.

Also of course, check your trans fluid level, and smell it. IT should not smell burnt.

mine used to do that a little 2, mine stemed from 2 problems which i have since fixxed, non of which had to with the computer, the first was that my trans fluid was shot, so i would start there, it might just need a trans flush.....or it could be play in the rear axle, which was my main problem....but since the fluid in the trans and my rear is all brand new, i have not had one hard shift

Did you do much highway driving with it? With mine, its fine for weeks around town and some highway, but if i drive on the highway for more than about 30 minutes each way it starts shifting hard for a couple days, then goes back to normal, still havent figured out whats wrong with it though.....

just throwing this out there as a curiousity.... what size tires do you have? if they are oversized wouldnt that mess up the gear ratio causing abnormal shifts?? That doesent explain why it shifted normal at first when you bought it though i guess. just wondering because mine has always shifted kinda hard and i just chaulked it up to the tires messing with the gear ratio.
