I'm pretty sure that the 89 still had a mechanical indicator. They are attached to a stud on the steering column by a nylon thread inside a plastic tube. If it doesn't move no matter which gear you are in the thread is either off the stud or broken. You may have to go to a junk yard and get the whole mechanism from an instrument cluster. Some p[laces will require you to buy the whole cluster, but it is detachable by a couple of screws. You will need to remove the shroud around the steering column to check the thread or even to remove the instrument cluster.

So basically 1. remove the cover below the column. 2. remove the shroud covering the steering column. 3. remove the thread from the stud on the left hand side of the column. 4. unhook the tube from the right side of the column, 5. remove the screws from the dash cap so you can lift it a little to remove the instrument cluster which is also attached by a few screws. 6. unplug the instrument column 7. from there it should be obvious what to do next.

Good luck,

:)>-

Good stuff Seabronc!

LMC sells the unit for some $$$$

as Seabronc advised, get it @ a yard to save $

See part 49-6303 SHIFT INDICATOR ASSEMBLY 1 REQ $49.95

F is for AOD

LMC messed-up the year ranges, but makes up for it the Notes as described by F for AOD.

Shift Indicator Adjustment; "...Well I got it taken care of but there wan no **** to be turned...no black tube either. There was a white plastic tube that has a cable in it....that was mounted around a plastic pin that is attached to the steering collum(sp?). There was a small amount of adjustment that can be made by the mounting ***** that holds the plastic tube to the collum. The mounting bracket for this has a slot where the mounting ***** is. I just loosened this up and adjusted it accordingly but.....it still wasn't enough. I actually had to put a O-ring around the pin that the cable gets attached to make up the difference that I needed but now it all works perrrrrrfect!..."

How do you remove the knobs to the lights and wipers? I got everything loose, but that's the only thing holding the bezel from coming out, I pulled, looked for screws, turned them completey left then right, can you help?

yo T;

I THINK this is correct;

press the button on the top+front of the light switch (have to lay on back and get to it by feel) then gently wiggle and pull the **** plus its stem out

or pull the **** off the stem? Do yourself a favor and buy a cotter pin puller..."

MIESK5 Note; can get this at most wal marts or parts store or $ store using an ice pick and bend tip to angle; use a finishing nail once and bent end over

The BIGGEST pain of the whole project was getting the knobs off for the headlights and windshield washers.... There's a tab inside the **** that you have to press to release them. Try some dental hooks or tiny hex wrench
