 Well I had to take the bronc into the shop yesterday. She lost her spark the last time I drove her. I'm a little ******, I just put in a new MSD coil and cap/rotor and 8.8 wires. She ran good for a couple of months then quit on me. I've replaced the brain three times now And I wont replace it again, if its bad i'm pulling all electronics and going carbed. Anyone know what else it could be? There is no spark from the coil and I swaped it out just to make sure still no spark.

Any help is appreciated. [-o<

I just got the call from the shop, It's the computer again!!!!!!!!!!!!

This will be number 4.

And I still havent got all the other sensors replaced that need to be.

I'd give anything for a per 1975 ford truck/bronco.

Can anyone tell me how difficult it is to switch to carb. I'm running a manual trans so the computer is only for the engine.

did this shop tell you if the EEC was fired or just "bad"; and did they do a Self Test for trouble codes? if so, did they say they found code #19, 19, 21, specifically or any code at all?

Wont be difficult at all, Need Distributer, coil, ignition box. I would recommend getting a MSD Brain Box and coil. Heck even the Dist. They are extremely easy to wire up. I put a set in a friends truck, I was done in about 20 Minutes, except for the mounting. Had to ge through everything again to make sure I didnt forget to hook something up. Thats what brought it to 20 Minutes. Kept second guessing myself, thinking there was more to it but really there wasnt. Fired up first crank and no problems at all. Might do it to mine yet too. The fuel pump may be an issue, but luckily the '89 has two pumps, I'd first try and disconnect the frame rail pump and use the low pressure in tank pump, I am unsure of the pressure of the in tank pump but a good idea would be to get a fuel pressure guage and a regulator. The pump will have to be hooked up to a toggle switch or something else creative. And obviously an intake and carb. If you dont already have a carb in mind, take a look at the new line of holley truck avengers, very good offroad carbs.

when switching to carb you are going to have to run an aftermarket pump that you can wire up through relay and to ignition or however you want to do it...or you can switch to manual pump

Spoke with shop the computer is fried........

Dam thats the third one. Mech said to find a ford oem out of the salvage yard. The reman. ones are junk. I cant even find one around here. Getting to old, yards only keep newer stuff.

Very tempted to go carbed but the wife isnt happy about putting the money into the bronco.

I would have to get everything i.e. carb, intake, dist., control box, fuel pump new fuel lines. And wire everything up. Shoot I've got so many projects right now, I cant take on much more.

Maybe I should just take my Father in-law up on his offer of the 62 F250 4x4. But I would have put put brakes in it.

Anyway sorry for the rant just tired of dumping money into this bronco.

ok;

Won't go into expensive; hard to do tests w/out sophisticated test equipt. so,

from past reading I found that voltage overloads due to a short in a solenoid or actuator circuit may damage the EEC or PCM in later yrs.

Still would like to know if the mech did a Code Scan or Self Test; may not work since EEC id fried, but..... try it, it is ez to do.

Another possibility is a water leak - common leaks in our Bs and F series is a windshield gasket fault that leaks water into drivers side kick panel & EEC; ck for water marks there or under carpet or mat up high.

another thing is to remove alternator & have it tested for free at local parts store such as NAPA; have them check for the presence of A/C voltage.a positive or negative diode inside the alternator could

Now that you mention it I do have a water leak on the dirvers side runs down on my floor.

I also remember that the bronc was sitting covered in snow for a few days before I drove it last. I only got about 1/4 mile down the road when it quit. I have been wanting to bump up to a larger engine so maybe this is the time to start. I was considering going with a 460 but dont want the added weight and having to upgrade the drive train. Now I think maybe a 351W is the way to go if I can find one complete from top to bottom.

The bronc is still at the shop.

Mechanic is going to swap distributors to see if there is a short.

will hope that we can trace the problem.

I do remember that occasioanly it would cut in and out giving it that bucking bronco effect.

And that was when it was dry so not sure if its the water leak issue.

We will see I hope.

OK,

Heard back from the shop. They swaped distributors and got it to run, the old one was shorted out. So then they looked for what was causing the short, turns out that the wiring harness runs between the plenum and firewall. It must have slipped down on to the pipes that run back there for the smog junk. Anyway melted thruogh about fifteen wires. Thats what shorted out my distributor. Pulling plenum to get to wires and make repairs. Should have my bronc back in about two days. Its nice to have an old time mechanic that will take the time to think things through and not give up.
