My 1993 4x4/auto 5.8 Bronco is having major issues with the acceleration and idle. During 40% of the time with acceleration it jerks the vehicle (and idle) up/down nonstop until it seems to hit another gear or randomly cool off about a minute to two later. Then this "hesitation" may or will start backup again and again throughout my drive time. In neutral it's very calm and quiet.. I'm not the most advanced with auto engine work, but to be fair I'm at a level of low intermediate knowledge. the radiator and belts are good and recently did oil change. I saw online many posts talking about replacing the IAC or MAP. Would this be the best solution/place to start? Or is spark plugs + fuel filter the best place to start? I don't have a code reader either, so I'm not sure how seriously that's really needed since it's a 20 year old vehicle. In true need for some intelligent knowledge to help guide me before spending my whole pay check and possibly not fixing the problem after all. I'm sure anyone can sympathize with that! Thanks in advance :)>- />/>

yo Justin,

I deleted your similar post (but w/ a lttle less info) in General Section;

Is Check Engine Light On while driving?

Try a Self Test for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC)s by my pal, BroncoJoe19

http://broncozone.com/topic/14269-code-reader/page__pid__74587__mode__threaded

The engine temperature must be greater than 50° F for the Key On Engine Off (KOEO) Self-Test and greater than 180° F for the Key On Engine Running (KOER) Self-Test.

Run it around to heat the engine up and shift thru all gears incl Reverse. Then turn off all accessories/lights, etc.

Make sure A/C is off and transmission is in Park (automatic) or in Neutral for a Manual & release clutch.

Do Key On Engine Off (KOEO) portion first.

And Post em here according to:

KOEO

&

KOER

Also, Joe incl. a vacuum leak test, do that too.

=====

Last time fuel filter was replaced?

Pull a plug or 3 and check

Hey There, Thanks for the quick response!

The check engine light is not on. Where is the best place to get codes checked? Will a pepboys or O'reilly's be able to do that? I already purchased the IAC. Do you think this is worth replacing or should I just try and clean it out first?
