I have a couple questions and a comment.
I have a rattle that sounds like it's coming from the T-case or transmission when I'm lobing at idle, that goes away when I push in the clutch. Everything seems tight when I'm crawling around under there. Also there is a lot of clanking in the T-case when I put it in 4WD and I'm idling. It goes away under load. It's a Dana 20. Does it need to be rebuilt?
And where is the best place to go for a set of black steel 15 x 10 rims? The aluminum centerline mags that I have on there are a real hassle to put back on, and if I bang a rock while off-road, I'd rather bend the rim and hopefully hold air, rather than crack the aluminum. Is there a good online source?
The comment is: I'm running the NV3550 5-speed manual transmission from Tom's that I bought new for $2500. To make use of 5th gear I have to drive at least 65mph. That's not a safe speed in an EB. Anyone replacing their 3-speed shouldn't bother with a 5-speed. Get the 4-speed manual from Tom's for $989 (rebuilt with adapter) or an automatic. Save a bunch of money. I'm not sure why Tom's even sells a 5-speed (and they have two.) Unless any of you guys have an explanation for me. I'd be glad to hear it. I do like the gear ratios on 1 thru 4, but I doubt I'll ever use 5th.
