I have a couple questions and a comment.

I have a rattle that sounds like it's coming from the T-case or transmission when I'm lobing at idle, that goes away when I push in the clutch. Everything seems tight when I'm crawling around under there. Also there is a lot of clanking in the T-case when I put it in 4WD and I'm idling. It goes away under load. It's a Dana 20. Does it need to be rebuilt?

And where is the best place to go for a set of black steel 15 x 10 rims? The aluminum centerline mags that I have on there are a real hassle to put back on, and if I bang a rock while off-road, I'd rather bend the rim and hopefully hold air, rather than crack the aluminum. Is there a good online source?

The comment is: I'm running the NV3550 5-speed manual transmission from Tom's that I bought new for $2500. To make use of 5th gear I have to drive at least 65mph. That's not a safe speed in an EB. Anyone replacing their 3-speed shouldn't bother with a 5-speed. Get the 4-speed manual from Tom's for $989 (rebuilt with adapter) or an automatic. Save a bunch of money. I'm not sure why Tom's even sells a 5-speed (and they have two.) Unless any of you guys have an explanation for me. I'd be glad to hear it. I do like the gear ratios on 1 thru 4, but I doubt I'll ever use 5th.

Hi Jim..,

That would be your "throw-out-bearing" that's rattling....not something you can see..!!

"Also there is a lot of clanking in the T-case when I put it in 4WD and I'm idling."

RU saying idling along with clutch out & rolling, or sitting static at idle.?

RU saying it "clanks" just while going into gear..?

Hmmmm....., I can run 65+ all day long....very safe & controlable...

Is everything underneath clean, tight, adjusted....? You don't have a big lift...

Try Summit Racing for wheels.

Hey Bully, throw-out-bearing makes sense, thanks. The clanking in the T-case is any time it's in gear and I'm not giving it any throttle. If I'm idling in neutral there's no clanking. Everything, steering and suspension related, is brand new on the truck. When the highway gets a little wavey and I'm doing over 60mph, it tends to want to toss the truck to one side or the other. I have the non-adjustable drag link, so my toe-in isn't adjustable. Wondering if I should upgrade that. I'dlove to be able to feel safer cruising 65+. Thanks for your help.

A resounding YES....(but first, measure your toe-in with a tape measure just out of curiousity)

RU sure the noise is coming from the T-case..?

My present rig & the '72 auto. I had (don't tell anybody).... I had both up to 90mph & it was still a one hand cruise. i.e. no diff. than 40mph.

However the underbellys were clean, tight, & correct.

DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME...! [-o<

Most of the rigs I've had...weren't safe at 30 mph when I first got them.... /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Drag links can be adustable too fine tune steering off the pitman arm and you can reindext the pitman arm for carzy lifts too, BUT BUT that has nothing todo with toe in, toe in is adjusted at the tie rods, I have found a little extra toe in will drive the 38s at freeway speeds better with more tire wear of course. I have never seen a not adjustable tie rod, even with sphereical rod ends they ***** in and out with a lock nut! Check agian under the rig and find the tie rod adjustments!!

15 by 10s can be found anywhere for 60 a piece or less but I only recommend them for large tires 36 and up otherwize the tire is spread wide and tends too take more air pressure too stay flat and results are rough ride and decreased fuel milage due too wide tire. If its off road only who cares.

Pay too play in the dirt with wide tires that makes it more fun.

On the issue of the 5 speed.. It all depends on a persons axle, trans case gearing..

If you run 5.13s in the axle with 33s so you can crawl a 5 speed will drive you there and back on the roads with proper rpms and better mpg.

There are several gearing tire trans gearing calcutators online that will help get most people in the right bracket for tires and axle gearing and transmission swaps.

I am currently np435 trans 6.7 ish dana 20 j case 2.34 and axles at 4.56 multiply that and u get about 71.5 too one crawl ratio in the rocks and its great with the 38s but at freeway speed 1*1*4.56 with 38s I can not hold fourth up a hill at 60 even with my healthy motor 302 built for all torque!

Sorry to say it take alot of thinking before you make one swap too get the rig todo what you want it too!

I would like too go c4, Klune v, dana 20 soon so do you want too buy my np435 hahahahjk

BBB is right...!!!

I was thinking tie-rod .... my typo, as Jim called out drag-link...

However., the '66 didn't have an adj. tie-rod
What did they do in 66 too change the end rod ends bang out bang new in ?, cut and reweld the rod bar too fix toe in? Ahhh now I know/.. bend up or down too set toe in too shorten or lengthen bar! To funny if thats correct a man soon to be on the moon 69 but no adjustable toe in.. Thats a first auto edition opps...LOL
