Howdy all,

I have priced around for the machine work, and decided I'm just going to buy either a short block or a crate engine to replace my 5.0 302 EFI. Was hoping to get some suggestions from you guys on what I could get to basically drop in. I don't want to change out the tranny (4 speed manual). I'm not looking to go too expensive, I want to stay fuel injected, and I don't want to go up to a 460. Any ideas would be appreciated...especially from somebody that has replaced their late model bronco engine. Thanks!

If you don't want to make any changes, go with a 5.0, even a 5.8 would require computer changes.

other than a yard engine; Ford Reman is an option; about $1,669.61 EA or long block

Thanks guys. But you know, I'm tired of speed density fuel injection. I want to go maf. Does that open my options up any? I understand I'll have to buy a new EEC. I'm also wanting to upgrade cam, aluminum heads, and possibly hyperutectic pistons. I don't want to go too much over $4000-$4500 to do this. I've been looking at new trucks, and thought, ****, for a third of the price, I could just get the old beast running smoother. She's barely broke in anyway LOL.

If you have other suggestions, I'd sure love to hear em.

Thanks,

Thanks Yardape. I had actually been looking at that same engine (the GT-40). Do you guys know if that will mate up to my tranny? I might just call them tomorrow.

Also, what is the way to figure out which tranny I have? Do I need to use VIN to look it up? Where? Thanks again!

No matter which tranny you have, it is a small block tranny so it will match up to any 302.

One thing to consider, I assume the GT-40 will come with the 351w firing order. I am still at a loss as what to do to solve this problem. The only locical solution to this that I can come up with is use a computer from a 351w truck. I would also consider a C-6 transmission for this swap also.

I just noticed that you have a manual transmission so disregard my C-6 statement

You will have to get the correct computer, same as what I said before. Will bolt up to the tranny no problem.

I've done a 180. I'm still going to be building up a new engine, over time...but for now I'm just going to do some work on my old 5.0.

I've decided to go with a mass air conversion kit. While I'm doing that, I'll have the upper intake off for other repairs as well. Anybody have any suggestions for some low-mid budget upgrades while I've got all that stuff off? Any tips or tricks on the upper intake manifold removal/installation?

Thanks all!
