removing crankcase breather hose

i have a 1990 bronco with a 5.0 efi. i am getting a lot of blow by coming through the crankcase breather hose. when i started looking at other engines i noticed that not all of them have a breather hose on them. i was wondering what would happen if i would remove the hose and just block the opening so that nothing could come out of it. would this work or be a really bad idea?????? thank you for the help

It would be a BAD idea to just block the end off, as you need the crankcase pressure to vent out. Otherwise, you risk blowing out seals wherever the pressure can escape. IF you want to remove or block off the hose, use a breather cap on the valve covers at least. Just don't disconnect your PCV valve, as it regulates the pressure. The caps on my chrome valve covers are the "breathers" I'm refering to, and the PCV valve is in back onthe passngr-side cover:

As always Justhootme has some good advice, but he just hit the hilites on why it's a bad idea. You can do a lot of damage to your engine if combustible gas doesn't vent off like it should.

sounds like a better plan than to just let it pour out onto the street i need to do that.

The only thing no one mentioned is, the pcv valve is the vent for the fumes! The breather is the inlet for the air to go IN, thereby sweeping out the normal crankcase gasses. When you have excess fuming thru the breather, it is an indication of bad rings. Not my 2 cents, fact!

This is pretty out there but my step-son bolted a small coffie can to the wheel well and ran a line to it from the valve cover.  He would empty it out about once a month.

I guess whatever works, but if you've got enough coming out to actually dump every month, you might want to look into fixing it. No telling what kind of damage you've got going on. I bet you've got some serious sludge and carbon in the top half of your motor.

Mine wasn't blowing half that out and I had some carbon pieces about half the size of golf balls in there. May want to look at it.

Read my reply. And I agree, worn rings will cause excessive "blow-by", and more oil will be going whereever it can vent out. :mad:

i finally found out what was causing the blow by.. the head gasket was going bad. the other day right after i pulled into my drive way it blew. :mad: i am in the process of removing the engine now so i can find out how much damage was done. hopefully it is not to bad [-o< . i was also wondering if any one knows where i can get a rebuild kit for a decent price?
