Hi everyone i have a 91 Eddie Bauer 5.0 5 speed that is an oil burner. I want to replace the motor but would like to know the best route. Will taking the motor out with the tranny in place pose some serious clutch alignment issues when i am ready to reinstall? Has anyone done this on the forum? Most of the threads talk about automatic transmissions mated to the engine. A torque converter would seem easier? What is the manual transmission experience and can you pass on any tech tips. Thanks

Hi Jesse, welcome..!

That may be the easiest task.

When the new eng. is ready & while bolting the clutch assy. to the flywheel, there's a plastic dowel of sorts

that is splined & slides in & aligns everything. (auto parts has this dowel)

Then when lowering & placing the eng. straight & square with the bellhousing.., it will slide onto

the trannie input shaft.

Sometimes it's necessary to jog the crank with a wrench to align the teeth.

You can also eyeball it..., have a tooth straight up on the shaft & a slot straight up on the clutch.

Having the eng. leveler attachment on the cherry-picker helps a lot for getting the alignment right on.

NO..., the bellhousing remains bolted to the trannie. (trannie must be braced in place from the floor)

Clutch comes out with the engine.  All that's left there in the bell housing is the clutch fork

and the throw-out bearing.

---- Check me on this..., I don't think things have changed over the years.
