was it smokin from the motor/ under the hood? that noise is most likely your power steering. that same thing happened to mine. i broke the line, had to have em fix it along with my oil problem.

I have the manual transfer case.

I guess you were mudding with your friend. Perhaps you got some mud up around your transfer case, and maybe even knocked off the connection to the solinoid that does the shifting for you. Try hosing down the transfer case if there is a buildup of mud, and then look to see if there are any connections not connected.

Also, consider reading through your manual about shifting in and out of 4 low and high. There is something in there about knashing gears. I don't know if that is possible with an electric shift, because it is 'suppossed' to check to make sure the vehicle is not moving before making ths shift. At any rate the link is here...

Please answer the question about the smoke.

Has the squeeling gotten any better?

The smoke could have been from a number of things. Hot exhaust and pond water doesn't smell to great. Also, instead of rebuilding the current t-case why not yank it and put in a manual shift t-case? Then you don't have to worry about the motor going bad. Just because the motor is off the case and seems to be fine doesn't mean it's working at it's full potential. Case in point: I had a bad window motor in my t-bird, didn't like to lift the window without help, when I pulled it off and jumped it the damn thing would almost spin the gear off. When there isn't any "drag" on the motor they like to work just fine but when you need them to move something they just don't have the umph. Also, if you put a manual shift t-case in there it's a complete bolt in thing. You'll have to open the floor for the shifter but thanks to the manufactures of ford, the place that needs cut out is already layed out for you. Not to mention you can get a nice t-case at the salvage yard with all the linkage and shifter you'll need for a pretty good price.

Zach,

IF you are going to take a 20 year old truck out to play, you are going to break stuff. IT can get real expensive real quick if you have to take it to a professional mechanic for anything that breaks. He not only has to pay to put food on his table, but also his phone, insurance, rent or mortgage on his shop, utilites, advertising... on and on. It is expensive to run a business!

If you don't already have some tools, for a hundred bucks you can get a nice little set of craftsman sockets, and some wrenches, and you will be off to a good start. Depending upon the issue you may save that much each time you use them. As you tackle a project that requires additional tools, go get them, and add them to your collection. Whatever they cost, you will probably save that much in labor charges to the mechanic. There are exceptions to that rule of course.

See if you can hook up with someone who can give you a little coaching, a neighbor, the high school auto shop teacher, or a wrench turning buddy, who can point stuff out to you. We can help you here, if you can post pictures. I was fortunate enough to have my dad to look over my shoulder and give me advice. No doubt it is important for one to know his limitations, there were certainly times when I took shit apart, and either couldn't figure it out, or realized the reapir was beyond my abilities, only to put it back to gether and pay for it to be done. But in taking it apart... I got additional knowledge and experience.

I agree with this statement. I have some money invested into tools. Everything from basic wrenches to cherry picker and engine stand to a good air compressor and air tools. It get's expensive but if I take into concideration I've done my engine 4 times in 3 years, to pay someone to do that would cost an average of at LEAST 2K a pop. I always started with the cheap tools and waited for the good ones to go on sale because they do get expensive. Also, a good ol set of cheapies for the junkyard too. The $400 set RARELY goes out there. Only when I'll NEED the 1/2" drive stuff. Not to mention, when you do it all yourself you feel alot different about it. More respect for it as well.

That's awesome! You can get parts for next to nothing, and have a place to put them in/swap them out, and have someone with enough knowledge to coach you? Jump in and do it!

Yeah mechanics can be a real PITA, yet the personal satisfaction of learning new stuff, and being able to say... yeah, I did that! You *may* find fullfilling.

Just my penny's worth of thoughts on the matter. :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Talk to your cousin, he probably has a book, or CD of which parts are interchangeable. For example electric door locks for a bronco are interchangeable with some year's crown victorias.

A lot of parts can come off of a F150.

my 91 got stuck in low range once, i found sitting in neutral on a very slight incline and really slowley rolling backwards (turtle's pace maybe) while playing with the button unbound it enough to get it out.
