when at idle or driving there this whinning noise that sounds like a wenier dog got stuck in my belt (i check and unfortanlly there isnt)

a buddy of mine said it could be the power streeing pump so i was wondering if that means it gonna quite on me?

also its not normal belt sounds its something that ive never heard b4, its like a whinning/grinding noise

how much will this run me if its the proplem, if not *** would it be?

If its a real high squeel (like squeeky sneakers) then it's likeley the belt itself, If it is the power steering pump it will get louder when you turn the wheel hard while parked.

If you replace the power steering pump then you might as well replace the water pump while your at it, just because you have to dismount the P/S pump to get the water pump off.

To keep from damaging your A/C lines use a 2X4 to brace the hood up (springs aint strong enough for this) and use a bungee cord to support the weight of the A/C compressor.

It might not hurt to take a block of wood and drill 14 3/8" holes in it (10 bolts for the water pump i think, 2 for the A/C, 2 for the P/S) with enough room to mark each one to make sure the bolts don't get mixed up, theirs several similar lengths so it's easy to mix em up. The pump itself, not too expensive 75 bucks or so depending on where you get it. maybe another 40 for the water pump (trust me best to replace it now before it goes while you have access to it)

The weenie dog squeal is common, and often normal for the Ford ps pump. Keep fluid in it, and the proper tension on the belt. If you want to replace it, look at the Saginaw ps pump swap. I have the one sold by Cardone A-1 on my 84 and 78 Broncos. Big improvement, JSM84

Is it just squeeling or do you notice it takes more effort to turn the wheel ? When you turn the wheel does the squeel change pitch ? If so then yeah it's the pump for sure. Does the sound change with the engine revs ? If it's not the PS pump then maybe the water pump, a dying air pump, probably not the alt but maybe just a bad idler pulley. The easiest way to start narrowing it down is to see what it does when you turn the wheel back & forth while stopped. Checking the fluid level is usually a dead giveaway too. Like JSM said you can do a saginaw conversion or just a straight out swap, either way you can get the pump from Snake Rd for prob $30-$40, maybe half that if you pull it yourself. If you wanna take a run down there lemme know since I need to go down & look for an inspection plate for my AOD and I may have to hit them up for some flywheel bolts & some other misc pieces. If you want swing by & we'll take a look at it & see what's what. I'll shoot you a PM w/my cell.

Just for the sake of comparison, Jeff's gets $100 for a rebuilt Ford PS pump: http://broncograveyard.com/bronco/i-32811_...mp__rebuilt.htm

and $195 for a rebuilt Saginaw pump: http://broncograveyard.com/bronco/i-20975_...pump_option.htm

You can also get a rebuild kit for your existing pump as well, last time I priced one I think they ran about $15. A good option is to pickup a used pump & swap it in then rebuild the one you took out, swap the rebuilt pump back in then put the used one on the shelf as a spare & rebuild it when the football season ends and life seems to have no purpose.

Outstanding !! Well, no not your problem but Saturday. I was supposed to go up to my mother-in-law's to take the Xmas lights off her house, the very *same* lights that she called me frantically about on Dec.20th insisting they must go up immediately and the same lights that she spent 90 minutes directing the placement of from her lawn chair while I was up on the roof. You picked a great day, I'll have to call her in the morning & let her know that I won't be able to take them down this wkend.

I'll give you a shout Thurs or Fri.

If the noise isn't changing when you turn the wheel then I'm curious to hear it. We'll figure out what's up w/it on Sat & then go to Snake Rd.

guys ford are known for the noisy power steering pumps, they changed the in the very late 90s they always make a sound unless the wheels are str8 and ur not moving the steering wheel, i actually like the PS noise, lol.make a vid and put it on youtube man. that helps all of us.

well i replaced the idler pully and although i discoveedr that it had mayb 1000miles left b4 it went it wasnt the proplem

so the next guess would have to be the PS pump?

we'll check this out on saturday and my dads gonna go to NAPA and get a new one

miesk5 offerd an excellent idea for listening to noises.

I use a stethescope, but he suggested using the cardboard tubing from gift wrapping.

Actually i think his idea may work better in this situation.

We actually wound up using one of those big honkin' 3ft Snap-On screwdrivers instead. Worked just dandy. It seems to be the PS pump but it's the oddest freaking noise. Sounds kinda like a slide whistle at idle & gets steadier as the revs go up. It's not at all like the typical PS moan that you hear, sounds more like air whistling thru a large dia. hose or something. Maybe a bearing on it's way out ? The other accessories sounded good but it changed pitch in the PS pump as the engine revs varied.

18-0 Man. Just one more & I'll be the guy out on the front lawn with a lit roman candle sticking out of his fly.
Hey... you better where your Brady shirt, or the neighbors will start wondering about ya :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

OTOH if the Giants can beat GB in minus 24 degrees, on their home field, you might have to save that roman candle for another day.

Now... where's my screwdriver... I think I'll go check my power steering motor.
