power steering burst open

I just replaced the worn out steering stabilizer on my 1976 bronco. Took it for a test drive and it was shuddering through the turns. I kind of forced the issue and heard a loud pop. When I looked under the hood there was PS fluid everywhere. It seems like the dipstick popped off. May have leaked around the end of the hoses, too.

Any ideas?

Interesting.., have not heard of that B/4..

What precipitated the changing of the stabilizer...?

Was this a new stabilizer kit.., or just the stock shock by itself..?

Is the P/S set-up the stock unit.., or add-on..?

Sounds like there was a looming issue in the pump and/or maybe in the steering box.

The stronger shock may have brought the problem to a head.

Worst case.., if the pump failed & sent "stuff" downstream to the box.., the box likely needs flushed. Or cleaned &/or rebuilt.

Need above info. to lesson the guessing... :-"

I replaced an aging Superlift stabilizer with a new Monroe stabilizer (stock). The suspension is all stock, as is the power steering set up.

I've since closed everything back up and took it for a drive. The problem seems to have corrected itself. Maybe all of the turning of the wheel back and forth (without the engine running) while I was installing the stabilizer built up pressure in the system.

I'm getting ready to flush and replace all the fluids soon, anyway. I guess I'll add the PS box to the list.

Maybe you got lucky.. >< <'>

After warmed up..., pull the dipstick & wipe on a clean white cloth. If it looks clean.., you may be OK.
