power brake system

I just purchased a 68 uncut and i want to add power brakes. How difficult is it to add a power brake booster/system? any advice for a newbie?

what about doing the disc brake upgrade?

I'd worry about front disk brake first. I noticed a big difference when I added disks. I don't have power and still stop good with 36's.

I would say hold up a bit as there may be some more pressing issues to deal with....

Check out all the EB stores online...JBG, Toms, W/H, Jeffs to name a few.

What's already done to this rig., what do you intend to use it for..? Street, trail, hard-core..?

I just converted front drums to disc and added power brake booster (all from Tom's). It stops great and I'm really happy with it but if I did it all over again, I would probably just redo the drums on all 4 corners because it would be so much cheaper. If your brakes **** now, you may have issues on the rear brakes you'll have to deal with to make it stop straight and not pull. This happened to me and I ended up redoing the rear brakes anyway.

My thing is that I wanted anyone to be able to drive it in town without any problems so I went all out. I wouldn't see any need in converting to all 4 disc but some do.

One thing I did figure out is that front discs won't do you much good without the booster. I don't know how it would work with adding the booster and leaving the drum brakes as is.

I've got a '73 that we picked up a few months ago. It has been a great rig so far. It still has the drums both front and rear. Some previous owner added a James Duff power booster set-up to it. Overall, the brakes work well. My booster that is on there now has a slight vacuum leak and should be changed out. I'm at that point now deciding just what I should replace it with. I don't see any need to switch to front disks at this point, maybe when my drums wear out I might consider it. Mine is lifted 3.5" and I'm running 33" BFG mudders on aluminum rims, it stops just fine with the drums.

I ran with front discs for about 5 years without any kind of booster with absolutely zero problems. A lot of guys will say that you have to have the booster or a proportioning valve to make them work correctly. That is both true and false. True, to a point. Most disc systems are designed with a boosted system & prop valve in mind. That being said, you run the hit and miss chance that it will or won't work with out it. I was one of the lucky guys that was able to run it without the boost system. When I went with rear disc as well, I moved up to hydroboost as well. I still don't run the prop valve and have never had a problem. Before you go plunking down $500+ on a booster system, look at both the hydro & vacuum systems. If you already have PS, it is cheaper to go the route of hydro than vacuum.
