A friend and I are building a race truck (93 ranger) and we got a 5.8 Windsor to shoe horn into it and the only problem is it has the pollution tubes from head to head in the back of the motor as this truck wont be driven on the street we don't need them for emissions compliance how do you eliminate them or if left alone without the rest of the plumbing will it not make a difference I am worried about exhaust gasses in the engine compartment or the holes causing a suction pulling atmospheric air into the heads

I might be out of left field on this but want to have as little un-needed crap in and on the motor as possible

Damn, I used to know this, really, I did. I'm trying hard to remember and I'm pretty sure the deal is that the bypass tubes either unscrew from the head and you can cran in a plug instead ot that you have to just remove the tubes as best you can and solder in a plug. These tubes just tie in to the air pump so for a racing application you just want to remove them & clean up the back of the head. Also plan on doing some porting, I believe those emissions heads also have that big-a$$ **** in the exhaust port that needs to be removed (a die-grinder does a **** of a job). If they're threaded then just remove the inserts and replace with plugs otherwise just braze them closed & be done with it.

they are the ones your thinking of at the and of the tubes they have a plate weldedon with a bolt to secure them to the heads am going to look for cover plates at summit racing and such but was wndering if we left them without the plumbing attached to the rest until we find an alternate way what would be the result (noise exhaust leak sucking wind etc. ) and yes the heads are getting ported and the lightning intake is getting pollished as well as many other mods will put up all details as we get closer to judgement day when the rubber leaves the tires and the squeeling starts

Yeah, you need to close off those ports one way or another of they'll ***** your flow numbers way the f*ck up. The one's I remember used threaded bosses but they may have changed to a press-in design. Either way you need to block them off. The guy doing the port-job should be able to do it pretty easily since he'll HAVE the damn heads right there on the bench, but on the other hand if he's gonna charge you $75 to do it then I'd skip that particular option.
