I have a tan Hard top I would like to change the color of it to Black but I want to have it look really good and not like crap.. I do not want it to fade and look gray after a year I want a good black color..

Is there any way to do this DIY style and have it turn out like a real black top???

Thanks Guys

I'm not sure what he used but Billy Toppless did this last year with his cap and it still looks pretty good. There's no reason why you can't do a good job of it in the driveway but it's all going to be in your surface prep, the paint you use and your gun. You won't get anything you'll be happy with from a set of rattle cans. Get the paint & reducer from your local PPG store & use a proper spray gun and it'll come out just fine, I've done it several times.

I've seen several of the factory hardtops painted either with the rattlecan paint or simple, cheap paint that didn't last a year. Part of the problem is the rough texture, the other part is the fiberglass. You will have better results if you sand the top first to get a smooth surface, then primer & paint. Recently, another member here (Potter) applied bedliner to his Bronco and hardtop. I think that would work better on the rough surface, esp if you want a black color. JSM84
