My oil pan gasket is shot and I'm leaking a fairly substantial amount of oil. My question is am I going to have to lift the motor up off the mounts to replace the gasket, or will I be able to get the gasket in there without dropping the pan all the way out? Also, I'm leaking some coolant and it appears to be coming from underneath the timing belt cover... I've never heard of an engine leaking coolant from the timing belt cover before and I was hoping ya'll might have some knowledge on fixing this problem as well. I'm gonna tackle this project sometime this week and any insight you guys could provide would be very helpful. Thanks.

It can be done without lifting the motor but it is a pain in the ass and if you drop one of the pickup bolts youll be taking it off anyway . 1 drain all the oil out of it 2. take all the bolts out of the pan some of the later engines have stiffener rails that go along the sides of the pan so watch for them and make sure you put them back in . 3 pry oil pan down till gasket gives it up and the pan falls 4 locate the oil pump pickup theres 2 9/16 bolts that hold it to the pump hmmmmm maybe they were 1/2 , very very carefully take them out and remove pickup from oil pump . Now you should be able to wiggle the pan out of there . I would get an SCE oil pan gasket from summit or jegs its made of rubber 1 peice and reusable I have never had one of those leak summit part number SCE-236090 for 302 and part number SCE-236091 for 351W at a cost of $27.95 for either one . Good luck :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Hey KJ,

I have a 94' 5.8L and replaced the oil pan. I did lift the engine to replace. Shop manual and mechanic told me this was the only way to replace it. I realized (half way through) that I had to also take off the upper intake manifold so that I could raise the engine high enough to get the pan out. Without taking the upper manifold off, I couldn't get enough clearance to get the pan out.

Hope this helps!

D

FIXED! Pain in the @$$ though. Thanks guys for the info. I did end up pulling the intake manifold off. The gasket was in two pieces and had multiple other tears in it. It's bone dry underneath now though.

My gasket has a slight leak, I'm a mechanic by trade and I wouldn't have done it at home, my hat's off to ya!
