This may sound stupid to some of you but, I am not sure how the dipstick tube is supposed to be properly installed. I got a new one made by Mr. Gasket and it has two notches at the end of the tube where it goes into the block. Am I supposed to just slide it into the block until the first notch hits or am I supposed to keep forcing it into the block until the second notch hits. The tube is supposed to be for a 302 but how do I know that it is accurate? Any help would be awesome. Thanks.

Just for a side note when I was 16 I put a new dipstick into a chev 350 and screwed it up and I raced it on an oval track 7 laps and it threw a rod and that was the end of it that year. I am still not sure how it was supposed to go in, But it didn't measure up to what is was supposed to be.

call mr gasket, what oil pan do you have makes a big differance and do you still have the old one to compare it?oh yeah don't beat it in you'll mushroom the end of it and the stick won't fit in the tube very well.

if all else fails drain your oil put in the dipstick fill her up with the right amout of oil start it back up to let the oil circulate shut it off let it sit for awhile then check it if it's not on the mark then make a new one.

i did the same thing, i bought a new tube for a 351 but seemed wrong. I put the one from the 302 in, and it was wayyyy too long, hit the bottom of the pan. so i kept the old tube with the new stick and it seemed to work. But i would like to now the correct procedure to putting the tube in.

If you still have oil in the motor and know its full then push the new tube in and see where it is on the new stick. You should know which way to go from there.
