just got an 88 Bronco 302, Of course being an 88 i diddnt expect everything to be perfect, but it has some flaws...... 1st problem the Speedometer doesent work, could it be speedometer cable, speed sensor?........2nd problem the mileage gauge doesent work, it is stuck on 143,249, what do i do?... 3rd problem i just drove 2 1/2 hrs from columbus to my house yesterday, did great! but today i was drvin through town made a really sharp turn, and the steering became DANGEROUSLY stiff, got home came to find out the Power Steering pulley had completely snapped of the the pump shaft.. Is it possible the pump is still good? bc i am currently tryin to change the ppulley only (which is pretty difficult to say).. i really appreciate the feeback, im somewhat mechanically inclined, so any steps to these problems would be great!

well with the first two problems, its because your speedo cable isn't connected somwhere. crawl underneath to the rear of the transfercase and just make sure that there is a cable going there and its pushed in all the way. then get a torx head screwdriver and pull the dash cluster out. you have to take the knobs off the wipers and headlights, ( small black cut out you put a small flat head in to release the knobs.) pull the cover off behind the knobs once they are off. one ***** holds the other side cover on, 6 screws hold the main cover on after that. then you are at the intrument cluster, there are 4 larger screws that you need to take out that are around the outside, might need to roll the key ahead and put the shifter into 1st if automatic, gently pull the instrument cluster out, and there should be a cable clipped on in the middle of where the speedo is. make sure it is pushed in all the way before reinstalling the dash.

if everything is secured properly then the problem is with the gear that goes into the transfercase. at the transfercase again, pull the bolt out of the transfercase that holds on the two pronged bracket that goes around the end of the speedo cable, pull the bracket out all together, then you should be able to just pull out the gear if it did not come out with the cable. plop in a new gear, firmly push the speedo cable and assembly back into the transfercase, bolt on that two pronged bracket and job is done.

if it was just the pulley that broke and not the pump shaft then you should be able to get away with just replacing the pulley, otherwise you need to get a new or used pump and pulley.

yes that its true the speedo cable runs both the speedometer and odometer. the speedo works with how fast the cable is spinning . the faster it spins the faster it shows on the gauge. same with the odometer the faster the cable is spinning, the faster the vehicle is going, the more distance is being covered, the faster the odometer winds up. thats why you might hear stories about the old cars where used car dealers would get a cable to a drill spinning backwards to roll back the miles. don't know if it works, I never tried it myself.

Well i come to find out the speedo cable was off behind the gauge cluster, I was able to put it back on.. BUT i dont know if it is working well or not, bc we stripped out the threads on the power steering shaft tryin to get that dang pulley on.. Called my mechanic, he is comin to get it tommaro charging me $75, gotta get a new pump $45, so not too bad i dont guess... Had 4 different guys helpin me with this, autozone and advanced only give you the puller, not the installer... But i really appreciate ya'lls help, i hope to get the truck back and see if the speedo and miles are workin, if not, guess i need to **** or replace that cable, again thanks fellas

If you find that the speedo is not working pull the cable back out of the speed sensor on the transfercase put a drill on it and have a helper watch the speedometer.run the drill forward or reverse fast only for a second one direction or the other should make the needle register. The cable consits of two parts the sleeve and the cable. The cable comes out of the sleeve from the end at the speedometer and should be smooth and free of any rust spots or kinks

thanks for that info, my buddy told me we could take that cable out to lubricate it, but it was never mentioned about the drill, i'll have to try that

Using the drill will tell you if the cable is in tact and if the speedo works at all. Ramp up the power slowly so as to not snap the cable.

are you sure you put the gear in correctly? if the needle is jumoping around its because the cable is very quickly changin the speed that it is spinning, either from the gear not in right, or friction between the cable and the casing, try a new cable, they are like $30

is there a wrong way to put the gear in? i put it in i thought like the old one came out... Would maybe putting bearing grease in the cable casing help?? Or should i just get an all new cable??

give the oil or grease a try, whats the worse that can happen, it doesn't work and you need to buy a cable? I tried wd 40 on mine, got a fair bit better but it still does some rubbing/ jumping before 50mph.

Im gonna try the drill thing, but after chirstmas Im back up to the old mans place so im gonna tinker away before my new job starts in january.

on the Gear; there is a C Clip that holds it in; is it mtd correctly?

See it here; Gear Change by Keith L http://www.supermotors.net/clubs/superford...istry/139/13464

Speedometers get into trouble when cables bind or magnetic heads cease due to the absence of lubrication. ....speedometers need periodic maintenance, too. The spinning speedometer head needs occasional lubrication (speedometer-head lubricant). Pull the cluster out, disconnect the cable, and feed modest doses of lubricant into the head once a year. Don

tell your idiot mechanic to figure out what a scrap yard is and get one ripped out of a T case that matches yours.
