It could be a small exhaust leak. doubt it. but they sound some what like a valve tap and they go away as your engine gets warm

What engine? Year model? A common problem on the 80's V8's is a cracked exhaust manifold, especially the passenger side. When you first start the motor, listen to the valve covers, amnifolds, etc. with a 3-4ft length of rubber hose, like a stethoscope. Just be careful around the fan and belts, please. JSM84

it might be the oil filter lol ....i just had that problem if it isnt a quality oil filter, it lets the oil drain out when your turn you truck off but when you crank it up it slowly fills back up and the tickin stops ... funny huh, try it go get a motorcraft oil filter and see goodluck try that if it isnt an exaust leak
