I just bought a 1988 Bronco with a 351 in it. Not that it matters, but it is an Eddie Bauer and it only cost me $150. It runs fine, needs a tune up and fixed up, but it runs.

The main downfall is that it leaks oil and power steering fluid.

I am showing no oil pressure on the gauge on the dash and would like info on checking it out. How do I find out which part is no good.

Would this cause my engne light to be on?

Thanks

Engine light could be anything, take it to an auto parts store and they should pull the codes for free. oil pressure sensor being bad or wires is all i can think of that would make it show no pressure....unless it really didnt have pressure.

If the sender, (which is just forward of the oil filter and under the water pump), is connected, just buy a new one and replace it. They are a common reason for no indication. Also since the engine is high milage, your bearings are probably worn which causes low readings. As long as it is not knocking, you can get a few years out of it by going to a heavy oil like 20W50. Also keep the oil toped off.

As far as the leaking goes, it is probably mainly from the valve covers. Get some new gaskets. Also check the tightness of the oil pan bolts. It may also be leaking out of the front and rear seals. Just locate your leaks and do what is necessary to fix them.

Good luck,

:)>-

The truck only has 81000 on it, that is why I want to get everything up to par on it.

Then your pressure problem may only be a bad sender or a connection. Like I said before, if it is not knocking then you must have atleast some oil pressure. If you didn't have oil pressure there would be a fairly loud knock. I run two pressure gagues, one is the stock glorified idiot light that gives a relative indication and the other is a gague that reads in PSI. In my previous post you can see the T connection that I am using to connect both the old electrical sender and the mechanical gague connection.

Good luck,

:)>-

I haven't really checked everything out that great yet...I have only had it for about a week. It does appear to be leaking from around the valve covers though.

Seabronc....there is no knocking noises...the motor actually runs pretty smooth. I will check out the sender and go from there.

Thanks for the great info guys.

I hate to be a pain but could you please let me know what size that T-fitting is and where you got it. I want to add a wet gauge (oil PSI) to my bronco. after the holiday. I don't want to be running back and forth to the parts or hardware store.

Ok, here are the parts I used. I purchased them from the Lowe's plumbing department and have also seen them at Home Depot.

1 ea. WATTS A730 PB101 1/4" Female Pipe Tee

1 ea. WATTS A738 PB110 1/4" x 1/8" Male Pipe tp FIP Bushing

1 ea. WATTS A740 PB113 1/4" x Close Brass Pipe ******

I used teflon tape on the threads to prevent contamination by thread goop.

1. Removed the sender

2. Theaded the ****** in the T (snug being careful not to dammage the threads)

3. Threaded the 1/4 - 1/8 bushing in the opposite end of the T (this is for the wet

gauge connection)

4. Threaded the T inplace of the sender

5. Remounted the sender

6. Connected the wet gauge

Unfortunately this is the best picture I can get of the connection since there is too much stuff in the way.

Good luck,

:)>-

Well I am very happy with my oil PSI now!!! I just completed changing out the oil sending unit and added a wet gauge and installed it in the dash. The oil gauge in the dash always read in the normal but to the low which concerned me. So I changed the the old one and now my dash gauge reads in the normal but toward the high at ideal and the wet gauge reads a little over 40 PSI. I havn't taken it out on the road yet because I am running a little behind for work.

But, I am sure that it will be fine. The motor has always run smooth and strong was a little concerned about the oil gauge. After looking at the oil pan the gaskit looks pretty new so maybe the prior owner dropped it for bearings or an oil pump change. Which I was thinking about doing but won't now. :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> SO if your oil PSI is low change the sending unit out at the oil filter first and then check. It may be okay!!

You read it right...$150. Let's just say that my brother in-law isn't the brightest in the bunch. He bought something newer and parked the Bronco. He had 2 buddies that were going to buy it and backed out, so he put the Bronco behind the shed. He told me $500, I told him to let it rot there. He said $150, I said ok.

So far I have only fixed the torque pins on the windows. I need to tackle the power steering fluid leak (it's pretty bad) and the window washer (it doesn't pump). I just took it a couple of days ago and it passed emissions here in Indiana with flying colors.

All and all, I am pretty happy with the deal.

Fixed my washer pump today. It just wasn't making a good contact with the plug. Another fix....zero dollars.

That's for sure.....I live within miles from the steel mills and oil refineries, but they are worried about my truck.

I figured I would try the emissions out first, since it is free, if it didn't pass, I was going to get the truck 10,000 lb plates (no emission checks).
