I just bought a 96 Bronco from out of state, while i was driving it home all went bad the Overdrive light on the Automatic gear shift lever began to blink, the abs light came on, and the speedometer stopped working at the next exit I stopped and shut-off the truck and re-check all fluids and visible wires when I cautiouslly started back to my trip the check engine light was now on and the trans. was winding out and slamming into gear can all this be related? Help! Any advise

Probably the speed sensor on the differential. Those things get their input from it and the computer determines when to shift based on input from it. Could be a connector came loose or off.

Good luck,

I have a similar problem with my 1995 Bronco. When I start driving all seems fine. After a few seconds, it shifts really hard in second and at that time the Overdrive lights start blinking. My speedometer doesn't work either. My ABS light has been on for several years (I was told that was a sensor issue, not an ABS issue).

Funny enough, when I drive away in 2, the hard shift does not happen (speedometer doesn't work though). Then, after I am in second, I can shift to Drive and all seems fine. at least as long as I don't go down to first and back to second.

I just came back from Ford and had them put in a new sensor. But that didn't help at all. The problem still exists. I guess I should have let them run some diagnostics?

Any other ideas?

Thanks!

TallyClogs did you happen to reset the computer by disconnecting the battery for a minute or so?? That may be what you need to do in order for the sensor to work correctly.

If the new VSS sensor did not help, the tone ring inside the diff could also have a major problem. Only way to determine is pullin the diff cover and inspection. Yer prolly due for a rear end fluid change anyway. Note for correct spacing between the VSS and tone ring, or any missing pieces.

Would this happen to be the sensor? the description says it installs in the transmission.
No, that sensor is for '87-'91 trucks with a speedo cable mounted VSS on the transfer case for the cruse control, and E4OD shift strategy ('89-'91).

You need the rear differential mounted VSS which from '87-'91 was for RABS; and '92-'96 RABS, cruse control, E4OD/4R70w shift strategy, and the speedo/odo.

No, it wouldn't, and on these OBD1 computers, not a good idea to do anyway. All the learned driving parameters are lost and ya'll would be runnin' inefficiently 'till they come back.

When reseting the codes just pull the negative cable for 15 seconds dont remove the positive or the codes wont be erased.

Hmmm? Power is power, and a lack of it by breaking the circuit will still erase all stored codes and driving parameters. Again, not a good idea, and not needed in this case.
