Well I'm new to the site so I may need help with the acronyms. I have a '75 Bronco that's been in my family since about '78 I think. It was a hunting vehicle for my Granddad and when he quit hunting he gave it to my Dad who gave it to me about 8 years ago. It's spent most of it's life in west Texas so there's not much rust on it. It's been in store the past 5 years and I just had it shipped to New Orleans where I've been living. Of course there's cosmetic things that need to be done but I'll worry about that later. The first issue I need help with is the transmission. It was rebuilt about 10 years ago and is not shifting properly. I have to get the RPMs up very high before it will shift out of first and it wont go into third at all. I've been using the low gear selector to put it in second but I have no way of getting it into third. I'm open to options. Is there an quick fix for this? Should I rebuild? Should I replace? If so, with what? It has the original C4 in it.

Also I'd like advice about what order I should rebuild it. I intend for this to be a daily driver one day, but for now it needs to be my rainy day vehicle because I ride a motorcycle most days. This prevents me from doing a complete tear down and rebuild.n Obviously the mechanics need to be sound first, but where to should I start? Aside from the tranny of course. One more big issue now will be rust. The humidity is horrible here, what if anything can I do to prevent rust from forming before I can have parts powder coated or primered and painted?

Thanks for any input!

Hi '75., welcome...

".....but for now it needs to be my rainy day vehicle.."

Make it safe...clean/insp. brakes, tires & steering.

Make it go...clean tanks, lines, carb., radiator, tune-up.

(You'll be back with more specific issues)

As for the trannie...check the vacuum line to the modulator on the pass. side of trans.

It connects with a rubber hose (they rot) there & I believe on the eng. as well.

Other than that., an auto trannie expert will have to chime in.

Thanks Bully Bob,

It's safe brakes have been reworked recently and are working better than ever. There's a bit of slack in the steering, I've tried to have that fixed numerous times and it always works loose before long. Does anyone know a way to prevent this? Or an upgrade that will fix it? The tires are also good BFG All-terrains with only about 2k on them.

It runs rich, needs a new auto choke, probably could use a tune up. All and all the biggest issue is the Tanny. After that I would like to start up grading and replacing.

I'll check on the hoses, they probably all need to be replaced. I guess I'll start by replacing the hoses and wiring.

Thanks

"I've tried to have that fixed numerous times....."

As in, what was fixed, & how...? & Manual or power steering..?

Fill in everything you know 'bout your rig on your signature page...it will show on every post you present..., & make it easier to answer, knowing what we're dealing with. :D/

"...Or an upgrade that will fix it?"

Stock steering is fine when tuned & tight.

"I guess I'll start by replacing the hoses and wiring."

I wouldn't mess with the wiring just yet..., unless you're refering to the "plug wires"

"Runn'n rich" could be the choke or, a sticky float, or the needle-n-seat.

Thanks for the Tranny tip Bully Bob it seems to have fixed the issue. I've put some info into my signature, but I still need to gather more. The rear end was re-geared while my Dad owned it and he can't remember the gear ratio so I'm trying to track down the paperwork. Once I get my crap together I'll fill in the rest. I think I will tackle the carburetor next. The Carb is stock and since the vehicle has been sitting for a while I think it would do it good to either rebuild it or upgrade it. Any suggestions on other Carbs to use? Not really looking to increase power just efficiency.

That's a good carb. & will serve you well for your intended use.

You prob. have 350's or 411's ( if they did the rear.., I hope they did the front as well)

Jack up the rear., mark the tire & mark the dr. shaft.

Rotate wheel one revolution....count the rev's of the dr. shaft. IT should rotate 3 1/2 times (if 350's) & (4.1 times if 411's) And so on...i.e 456's will give you 4 1/2 + revs.

Might want to do the same with the front.

----- Post some pics...!! :)>-

Welcome 75,

From your post we have the same rig. Mine came out of Texas and is nearly rust free and is uncut. I had to replace all of my fuel tanks due to corrosion. You may want to drain the tanks and see what comes out. Mine was horrible. I am having steering issues too and a vibration that I have yet to figure out where it is coming from. Good Luck!

Thanks Bully I may just take the carb off and clean it up. The automatic choke was removed at some point so that needs to be replaced. I'll check on the gearing I'm not sure if they did both front and back or not, but I need to get my jack back from my buddy first so I can check. I'll get some pics on here soon.

RG75 mine came from Midland, Texas I know there is quite a few around there. I haven't had as much trouble with the fuel lines. Mine has been maintained very well and over all is mechanically sound.

One issue I have is the dash lights. The only light that works is the left turn signal. Where is a good place to start troubleshooting that??

--- Best bet there is gett'n your hands on a manual with diagrams.

A lot of those problems are; fuses., dirty fuse grippers., dirty spade connectors., dirty/bad light switch., bad flasher., bad ground., loose connection...... to name a few. :-B

--- Wiring = patience --- :-"

I forgot to mention my 1 little trick...............

You can clean all connectors with "Lime-Away" ....I usually use a Q-tip.., then rinse with H2O..., then treat with thin elect. grease of spray ****.

This will bring the connectors, fuse grips, etc. back to like new condition. :)>-
