After changing out my flexplate and starter (thanks for all the help) I've now got a grinding noise on start up. The rig chewed up a plate before but had the incorrect starter for a 302 when I bought it. Dropped the case, trans, drive lines etc changed it out and the starter for a 351 is now installed. It was a little noisy on start up but after two weeks or so there was a bad grinding noise. It's now more common and seems to be getting worse. I know it's uncommon to shim a Ford starter, but it sounds like that's what it needs. My other thought is being a rookie I didn't line up the flexplate and torque converter properly? I've seen on YouTube that if the drain plug is in the wrong spot on the plate it can warp it. Is this accurate? I really don't want to pull it all apart again but don't think I have another choice at this point. Where should I start looking?

Yo,

This is all I have for you,

Shims for Ford 2 bolt type, WAI PN 76-2306; "Shims needed due to worn ****** bearings in engine; Replaces Ford D7TZ-11N004; 2.3mm (.090 in.) T; Used w/ 2 or 3-hole D.E. housings. On engines with worn ****** bearings, the excessive crankshaft end play may cause pinion damage when the flywheel moves toward the starter. The 76-2306 helps prevent pinion damage by backing the starter away from the crankshaft flywheel..."

Wai does not list the WAI PN 76-2306 in their site now...
