I'm new to the forum and I really hope you guys can help me. I'm replacing the stock carb on my 87' with a 351W in it. I got the old carb off with no problems, went to seat the 1406 and it won't go all the way down. On the drivers side of the intake manifold there is a part that is bolted in with 2 bolts to the right of the carbirator. The throttle lever won't clear with the the kick down lever attachement. I have no idea what it is or what to do. I've checked Edelbrocks site and they don't have anything. I've attached a pic to show you what I'm talking about.

Any ideas what to do?

That is the manifold heat control valve. On the end of the shaft is a plate kind of like a choke plate. It covers a hole that is a direct path to the exhaust manifold on the driver side which also has a flapper on it. Pull it and check to see if plate on the shaft still exists, ( sometimes it has been burned off). It's function when working is to feed a small amount of exhaust gas back into the intake when the engine is cold to preheat the fuel vapors. Once the engine gets to about, I believe it is, 95 degrees it closes. You could use a spacer for the carb (like the EGR plate with no hookup) or remove it and fabricate a cover for the hole using that part and removing the vacuum operator and shaft.

Good luck,

Thanks Seabrocnc. I talked to Edelbrock today and they told me I needed to put a spacer in to lift the card above it.

Now I have another problem. There was already a plate below the the stock holley that have the PCV line connected to it and a EGR valve on the back of it. I've attached another pic. You can tell this thing is probably clogged up. I called the local Ford dealership to find out what the part was from the part number on it and they told me that they were discontinued. Should I just clean this up as much as possible or can I just use a 2" spacer to lift of the new carb and block off the vacuum line that was connected to this. I don't want to ***** up my engine so I was leaning torwards just cleaning it up, putting a new gasket down and moving on. What do you guys think?

Thanks Crazyhorse. I'm just going to have to find a 2" spacer local. It was a pain in the a** just to find some 3" carb studs. So I should just block off that vacuum line and go?

Will the hole in the manifold blow out the gasket between the manifold and the spacer?

Thanks for all the help. I went ahead and ordered a 2" spacer kit from Edelbrock at Auto Zone. No one local had one at any of the performance shops. Should be here to tomorrow so I'll let you know how it goes.

I hope this covers everything. I shouldn't have a problem using the stock air cleaner should I? I've seen a few spacer kits for those too.....

YOU SHOULD'NT..BUT I DID'NT PUT THE STOCK BREATHER BACK ON MINE WHEN I ADDED THE 750 HOLLEY..I WENT WITH THE 14 INCH CHROME BREATHER...WITH IT I HAD TO USE THE SPACER ON IT TO JUST RAISE IT ENOUGH TO CLEAR THE THROTTLE LINKAGE....YOU MAY NOT HAVE THAT PROBLEM WITH THE STOCKER BUT THAN AGAIN YOU MAY HAVE TO GO TO AN AFTERMARKET BREATHER....LET US KNOW HOW WELL SHE RUNS...IT'S GREAT TO SEE OTHERS KEEPING THESE WILDHORSES UP AND RUNNING....GOOD LUCK.... :)>-

Well, i guess that brings me to another question about the stock breathers. If I go with a 14" aftermarket, do I just cap off the vacuum lines that are running to it? Man, I'm trying to read as much as I can but every time I find the answer to one questions, I come up with three more.

I'll definately post the results. Thanks again for your help.

YEP,ALL THAT IS...IS THE VAC.VALVE THAT OPENS THE FRESH AIR DOOR ON YOUR STOCKER....WON'T AFFECT YOUR AFTERMARKET BREATHER...IF YOU GET THE STANDARD BASE ON YOUR BREATHER YOU MIGHT NOT NEED THE SPACERS....THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT I HAD ORDERED BUT ENDED UP BEING DROPDOWN BASE SO BOUGHT THE SPACERS AND WORKS JUST GREAT...I KNOW COULD'VE SENT THAT ONE BACK BUT THEY WERE OUT OF STOCK ON THE ONE I WANTED AND THIS ONE WORKS....AND THE ONLY DUMB QUESTION IS THE QUESTION THAT'S NEVER ASKED....GLAD ME OR THE REST OF THE GUYS CAN HELP...... If you are not going to use the EGR function, then just use a spacer. The hole in the manifold will have exhaust at it but the spacer with a standard gasket should be sufficient to block it up. That is the path that the exhaust gasses take to get to the EGR. A a carbed 351 will run just fine without the EGR function, later EFI engines require the EGR for other reasons than emissions.

Good luck,

That line usually goes back to one of the vacuum trees that are on the intake manifold, usually the one just in front of the carb. Remove the entire line and cap the port on the tree. If that is the only thing on that tree you could remove the tree and put a plug in the manifold. There are some other lines you won't be using also, like the Fuel bowl purge line. Follow that back to the valve on the carbon canister. I suggest leaving the carbon canister and the control function since it serves two functions; 1. The fuel bowl fume purge (no longer functional), 2. the canister keeps the tank pressure equalized and keeps it from expanding and contracting with temperature changes, especially in the summer.

Good luck,

So it the spacer plate didn't cover the EGR port all the way on the manifold. When I cranked it up, the iddle shot up to over 3K and kept going higher. I called Edelbrock just to verify my trouble shooting steps and they informed me that I needed part number 8714. Its a spacer plate which is designed to completely cover the hole.

When you guys uses a spacer to cover the hole, did you have the same problems?

NOPE,I DIDN'T HAVE A PROBLEM..MAYBE THE SPACER EDELBROCK HAS WAS A LITTLE SMALLER IN DIAMATER..THE ONE I USED WAS A MR.GASKET 2 INCH SPACER FOR SPREADBORE CARBS..AUTOZONE NORMALLY HAS THEM HANGING IN STOCK...TAKE THE ONE YOU GOT AND COMPARE THE SIZE...MIGHT BE ALITTLE DIFF...BUT THAT AND TWO GASKETS WAS ALL IT TOOK..NOW THAT I THINK ABOUT IT 1406 IS A SQUARE BORE ISN'T, IT THAT MAY BE THE DIFFERENCE ...YOU MAY HAVE TO USE THAT SECOND PIECE....CAUSE I REPLACED A HOLLEY 4180 WITH A HOLLEY 750 THAT MAY BE THE DIFFERENCE IN SPACERS...HOPE THIS SHEDS A LITTLE MORE LIGHT ON THE SUBJECT FOR YOU....KEEP GOIN YOU'LL GET IT .... :)>-

I'll mbet that was exciting @-) . I just left my EGR in place. If the EGR port is closed and there is no vacuum to the EGR, it is effectively plugged.

Good luck,
