Welcome to the Zone. Post some pictures under Introductions.

Engine firing order for a 302 is 15426378, 351 is 13726548.

Good luck,

:)>-

1st go back over the firing order and make absolutely sure all wires go to the correct plug. Also make sure that the wires are seated properly. You may want to take out the plugs and check their condtition. Rough running could be a crossed pair or bad connection. Use a timing lite to check the timing. Make sure you actually have it set as indicated on the emissions sticker.

You still haven't told us what year truck you are talking about. Why don't you post a couple of pictures of the engine. Is it set up with the factory vacuum controls? or has someone torn everything off it? If the previous owner messed up the firing order, did he mess with the distributor? You may have to go thru the new distributor setup proceedure to get it set right. It could be a tooth off.

Sounds like the distributor cap has been on for a while, it wouldn't hurt to replace the cap and rotor, they are cheep. Do you have any other indications other than just rough running? Do you get a check engine light?

The problem is a whole lot of things can cause rough running. Does it sound or feel like it is missfiring?

well when it runs it does miss a few cilinders i was just thinking there is 96000 miles on the engine and 116 on the truck the engin was replaced 2 years after it was bought due to engin fire but the fire was in 90 so that wouldn't affect anything but i was talking to the prefious owner and he told me it sat for a year but he just had it running a few days ago to moveit so he could shovle and there is evidence that it was moved so i know it runs but i can't get it to really run long enuf to know exactally whats wrong should i put new plugs in it or should i use the old ones

OK, I have been looking around and there is some information that 85 -90 302 ** engines use the 351 firing order. Try using the 13726548 firing order.

It isn't refered to as a ** after 1985, but Lazer cams has the following note in their suggested cam list. Since Ford didn't offer a 302 in anything but the EFI engine after 85, I suspect all 85 - 90 302's are included in the firing order change to the 351 order.

The Windsor style V8 (221-302, 351W) has appeared with two different firing orders. The camshaft must match the firing order used. 221 through 302 engines (except 1985-1990 302, ** and with hydraulic roller camshaft) use firing order 1,5,4,2,6,3,7,8. Camshafts may be interchanged if the firing order on the distributor is also changed to match. 351W and 1985-1990 302, ** (with hydraulic roller camshaft) using firing order 1,3,7,2,6,4,5,8.
