Adding to my minor but very annoying problems...my temp gauge seems to start migrating to the hot side whenever it has warmed up and is idling. temp sensor, thermostat, hoses, fan clutch, etc. are all fairly new. heater hoses arent connected (bad heater core that i havent replaced yet). it does have the fan shroud in place, however, at the very bottom there is a 12" x 2" section cut out from the previous owner. im assuming this was done bcuz the original fan may have been warped and hitting the shroud or bcuz 3" body lift was installed, but for the most part it is intact. Anyhow, my question is..i would like to install a aftermarket temp gauge/sensor. there is a port on the thermostat housing, which had some sort of vacuum port initially, which isnt used now, and has been blocked off (with the brass fitting directly behind radiator hose)..can this port be used for an aftermarket gauge? see pic

That looks to be after the t-stadt, so you would not be getting the correct temp. of the coolent until the t-stadt opened and the coolent was circulating. You would not be getting the engine coolent true temperature. You need a port in the manifold or the head.

FYI: if the shroud is cut the temp will go up slightly, as the cooling air cannot be pulled through the rad as effeciently.

Adding more & more gages can be an exercise in futility. :( /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Find another source for reading/verifying the eng. temp. (i.e. lazer)

Look in your book as to how to test your present dash gage.

Duct tape the hole shut & see if that helps.

There is a port just ahead of that on the engine block. I used it for adding an aftermarket gauge that reads in degrees rather than C -> H. That is nice but really not necessary as Bob said. It isn't going to solve the problem. One of the main problems with a mechanical fan and the pump is that they are mod inefficient when you need them the most, "at prolonged idle when it is HOT out", as in off road slow moving. You may have a combination of problems, ie. you need to do an engine flush to increase the efficiency of heat transfer; your radiator is getting clogged, (replace with a larger one, for example the one that is used on a truck with A/C).

I never experienced the problem after increasing the size of the radiator, and adding an electric fan. Not just any electric fan will do though. You need one with a high CFM rating. I used a Lincoln Mark VIII fan, 3200 CFM. That also required an upgrade to a 3G alternator to handle the start and run current of the fan, (100 Amps start which settles out at 35 running amps).

If you are interested an electric fan, I have some pictures on my Supermotors site, see my signature below.

Good luck,

:)>-
