I haven't had a chance to get climbing under my 1983 Bronco that much other than to adjust the clutch (I was hoping that would help out with the difficult start ups & impossible downshifting to 1st, not the case... it feels like it is unsynchronized).

It is dark out and the ground is muddy, so I don't feel like wiggling under there much tonight; so I am going to try to crowdsource the answer.

The Base Info that I know: 1983 Fullsize Bronco // i6 300 // 4 speed manual // 4L 4H 2H transfer case

My shift pattern is:

R13

_24

From what I have been reading the Borg Warner T18 & NP 435 are both:

13

24R

Any ideas? I'm just trying to figure out what the **** it is.

sounds like a 4sp toploader or T-170 from a mustang or ranchero, I had a t-18 in my 81 bronco and yeah the shift pattern was

1 3

2 4 R

our 69 mustang on the other hand is a 4 spd top loader with

R 1 3

2 4

ps cant get the damn number spacing right on the bottom one but you get the idea

I did however just read that different years/ models with the t-18 used both shift patterns. step one would be to have a good look at it and try to id it from a tag, serial number, or overal size and dimensions.

I'll crawl under there tomorrow to take a closer look. It definitely feels like 1st & reverse aren't synchronized which would eliminate the toploader, but it could just be the fact the clutch is shit.

I appreciate your insight.

my t-18 also didnt have syncros on 1st or reverse, but my 1st was also so slow I could take off in 2nd, and usually did. 1st was more for taking off with a load from a stop where you don't need a syncro, and no reverse syncro was a sort of saftey mechanism so you dint hit reverse while trying to hit another gear.
