I have a 89 bronco with a EFI 302 and E4OD tranny. I've had many older model ford trucks, all that I can work on, except for this thing. I have had the truck for a few years and have had nothing but problems with everything from the fuel injection to the computer on top of a tranny rebuild, which is no biggy. I am thinking seriously about going old school with everything under the hood. Removing the fuel injection, computer and maybe even going with a C6 tranny just for kicks. No matter what I do to this bronco, it will run great for a few months then we're back to the same old problems on top of not having any power, 75MPH down hill is not to impressive. Love the bronco and my daughter will **** me if I get rid of it so im just looking for any advise that would help me out. Is the EFI carb switch worth it or am I just stuck working on this thing forever?

EFI Swap to Carburetor

EFI Swap to Carburetor; "...It's actually a pretty simple swap. Basically all of the computer/sensor stuff can be scrapped. You won't need any of it. What you will need...a carb (obviously), a new intake manifold, a new distributor, an ignition control box (like an MSD or Mallory box...I've had good luck with MSD 6A boxes so long as they're not exposed to significant heat), and a carb fuel pump. The EFI pump is way too strong for a carb so you'll need something like a Holley carb electric pump. The ignition stuff is pretty straight forward, but for a working tach you'll need to find the tach wire in the ignition wiring harness and attach it to the positive side of your coil. I know in Mustangs this wire was green with a yellow tracer. It may be the same in your Bronco, but it's good to double check. For a carb I would use something like a Holley 600cfm double pumper or a slightly smaller Carter carb. I had a 625cfm Carter on my Mustang before I switched over to a turbo'ed EFI setup and it was a little too much for the motor. One point worth stating is that if you have an automatic transmission that has overdrive (like an AOD), you'll need an adapter for the TV linkage on the transmission since AODs never came on carbed motors. One is (or at least used to be) available for Holley carbs through Sacramento Mustang, but they retail for just under $100. If you have a 3 speed like a C4 then all you'll need to do is make sure the carb has a kickdown linkage. Mind you I got my old Carter to work with my AOD...but I think that was just sheer luck..."

Man do I understand your frustration. I am doing some mods to my 302 and you might want to watch what all I do. I done it in and mazda with the 3L v6 and it runs like a scalded dog now. I am fixin to do the same to my bronco. and you might have a lot of the same issues I have. Pull it down to the heads or the intake up so you can get to the lifters and do a good cleaning. i'll show how to rebuild the fuel injectors as well.. more later, Ken

Well I do work for A parts house part time as a parts manager. Send me what you need and I will see what I can find. Some yard queens can be tested before you buy or install. As I tell my customers that shop the yards as I do. For altenators and starters and most control modules, They can be tested at the parts store easily and easier than after they are installed. I know Autozone does it for free.

Love-Hate,

As I told the moderator, I am currently performing almost an exact conversion mentioned above from EFI/computer to Edelbrock intake manifold with a Holley mounted on top.  Should be done this week, and promised to post pics and results.  I have a strong 351, but I too have come to hate the EFI over last 20 years of driving and repairs to it and replacement of 2 computers over those years.  What a PITA.  You will need a tranny controller to control whichever tranny you have.  Mine is an E4OD.  Feel free to contact me anytime.
