ThanksGiving day and I'm sitting here answering questions, jeez I need a life (actually I'm just waiting for the bird & have a few minutes after making the potatos, squash, beans & corn)

To get back to your question, that hose is the vent line for the differential. Strictly speaking it doesn't need to be there but extending it upwards like that from the fitting helps keep water from getting in there. If you like to play and spend any time in deep mud or water then you'll want to make sure it's in good shape and perhaps replace it with a longer piece. It's also a good idea to put a loop into the top so it looks like an upsidedown "J" because *that* will also help to keep water out. If you REALLY like to goof around and get wet then run it on up to the frame & attach it there with a breather element on it. That way it's way up and out of the way and you still get good ventilation without worrying about water in the banjo. K&N makes small oil-impregnated breather elements intended for valve-covers that work well. Check it ocasionally to be sure it doesn't get plugged up or otherwise pinched off because without a vent tube you'll blow out the chuck gasket (the one around the differential carrier if it's a 9" or the one on the diff. cover for the 8.8").
