I have a 1970 bronco with the 9" rear end, 28 spline with the dana 30 front end. I believe the rear end is a limited slip of some sort. I dont do extreem rock climbing but do go 4 wheeling during deer hunting and need something a bit better to climb sometimes on steep climbs with shale and rock. I just spin the tires and would like to put either the air or electric lockers on.

They seem pretty expensive so probably just the front or the rear. Any suggestions on front or rear and either air or electric? What about the best quality brand and price?

RU still pondering this...?

If so., here's what I would suggest;

---- "I believe the rear end is a limited slip" ----

Jack up the rear & (in neutral) rotate one wheel if the other follows in the same direction...it has Posi.

If Posi., put one wheel on the ground & see if the raised wheel will turn. It should be tough to turn.

NEXT... **** out all the juice in the pumpkin & put in new gear oil & a good quality Posi additive.

THEN .. make sure your front axle is actually engaging & driving.

NOW.., go to the hill & try again...however air down to about 18-20 lbs. as well.

-------This could be all that's needed to get you up hill----

FINALLY., you can't put a locker on a D-30 but you could go to Posi in the front.

---W/O pert. info. on your rig set-up.., it's hard to give any other pointers. ---

I am in the process of restoring a 1974 Bronco and went with Air Lockers front and rear. I searched high and low and really thought about my options. Basically if you want a selectable diff for a 9" rear end, there's the ARB and nothing else, unless that's changed in the past year or so. As for a locker or really any kind of traction diff in your D30, I'd really think about that one. Traction diffs work by transferring all the available torque to one wheel. So if you have one wheel in the air spinning freely without a care in the world, 100% of the torque goes to the other side (even if just for a moment). Depending on how much traction that side has, you could very well snap an axle shaft. Also during a hill climb there's little to be gained from a locking front end anyway. I just put one in mine because I like spending money. Consider your budget, needs, and mechanical abilities, research the prices and figure out what's best for you. I will say that even a limited slip rear diff is a big improvement over an open diff. My Bronco was so equipped from the factory and easily distinguished itself in the field compared to my buddies' rigs.
