lifter noise

I just replaced my stock manifold with a Edelbrock performer and now have what I think is lifter noise on the driver side. I was very careful to ensure no FOD fell into any ports. Any ideas on what I did to cause this.

Not likely you did anything, i.e. not going any deeper than the intake.

Some possibilities;

A lifter just happened to stick or collapse.

A rocker-arm came loose

--- pulling the valve cover, you can look/test for this ---

On occasion, a fuel pump can make a click/noise.

I will take the valve cover off tomorrow and check it out. I failed to mention that I checked the oil and it appears to be just that, oil, no coolant. Just seems like too much of a coincidence that it happened after my tinkering.

You might also check the manifold to head gaskets and the carb to manifold or adapter gaskets for leaks. Is there a heater passage between the carb and manifold? Sometimes vacuum leaks can sound like mechanical noise, particularly if it's between one of the manifold runners and the head. I know that sounds wierd, but it's happened to me.

I rebuilt the top end and added three types of injetion and infection propane four barrol carbs stock and a carb avenger and tuned the valves

(most 302s are a 20psi turn on the torqe wrech on the valves and its done ) multi times and the 302 always had a weird tick on the drivers side never could find out what it was. I finally gave up and drove it a couple thousand miles till I sold it for something different.

Sold it cause I had it for 6 years and was tired of it not cause it was broken hahah It ticked on the drivers side for ever no mater how many gaskets I changed haha

It could be a dirty lifter. Try substituting a quart of atf for oil in your next oil change. Had to do it in the truck i drove in high school about every third change or it would get noisy.

My 2 cents is check simple first. Check the PCV valve in the valve cover if you have one. I personally pulled the valve cover twice (thinking it was rocker arms after changing the cam) before I realized it was the PCV valve hammering. Just a thought.

Turns out carb's power valve failed and oil had a lot of gas in it. Cam certainly flattened, Just a coincidence I had just changed the intake.
