[-o< how big a lift can you go on a 77 before you have to cut axles to compensate for the angle?

From what I see the 5.5" should be the max height. Even if the front axle is rotated and pointing upwards inline with the driveline you will have a bind where it connects to the t-case. Otherwise you will need to talk to www.highangledriveline.com and spend lots of cash on a special driveline. Dissconnect your front driveline off the Dana44 end and see how far it drops, then try to turn it. You will find you can't turn it when its all the way down because its in a bind. Then lift it a few inches and you will start to be able to turn it. Thats the location of the lowest point unless you lower the t-case. Lowering the t-case is the best thing you can do to save u-joints and keep the center of gravity lower. Problem is you can get high centered easier but with the short wheel base and power of a Bronco who cares. You want it in a happy medium location for suspension articulation, this is why I run a 3.5" lift and added a 2" body lift to gain clearance for the 38's! Seems to work for me...
