The first two digits of a ford part number refer to the first production date or the last revision of the part. The first letter refers to the decade d=70, e=80 and so on, the second number is the year in that decade. There for D3..... means its a 73 or later pan.
I know on my Mathews there is a stopper, the cam is actually engraved with 65 and 80 by the ***** hole. Not sure how it works, but thats how mine works. Let me know if you want a picture.
