I just bought this beautiful 94 bronco. Machanic gave it his blessing. It runs awesome. 100,000 miles. I filled it up for the first time today and when I got home I noticed a leak coming from the bottom middle of the gas tank skid plate. But its not gas, I think it is break fluid. Does this make sense? Please drop some wisdom! Thank you!

Welcome Cram,

I won't say that it isn't brakefluid, but it's more likely that the seal for the pump module in the top of the tank is leaking.

When you filled the tank, the leak showed it's self.

A brake leak that bad, would result in a low pedal, and low fluid in the master cylnder. Do you have any of these symptoms?

Either is not something you want to let go. Be very careful and check the brakes. A gas leak is more likely.

I would check your brake fluid level cause that will easily clear this up. there is the mounted flex line for the rear brakes, ive seen it mounted off the frame and ive seen it mounted right in front of the gas tank so what your saying is possible, but the likleyhood of your brakes starting to leak right after you do your first fill up is a bit of a stretch.

thank you guys for your quick response. i was just talking to some guy who owned several broncos. and he said it sounds like gear fluid overflow leaked out. he had the same thing happen to him a while back as i described it. the fluid that leaked out actual stopped after a few mins, it didnt evaporate like gas does and it was kind of oily. he mentioned it was probably cause i was parked on a incline. also today there is no leaking from that area and i was parked on a flat surface all night. DO YOU THINK THIS IS VALID REASONING?

Well.., fill it up again & see what happens..! :-"

I don't see how gear oil can get up on the tank., then drip down..?

I think all the brake lines are below the tank as well.

Gas leaking fr. the top of tank.. can mix with God knows what up on top, & on the upper side of the skid plate. (Maybe a dead cat or two ;) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> :-&) When it gets to a "drip"... it's not likely to look (or smell) like gas.

However., gear oil has a "stink" all its own.

I resized my picture to 150x112 using microsoft paint.

Fluids only follow gravity to if its coming from the skid plate then the leak has to be above the skid plate and the only things above the skid plate that can leak is the gas tank.

like bully bob said when gas leaks in an area like that its probably not going to look like gas when you see it.

The rear brake flex line connects to the hard line at the frame near the front driver side of the fuel tank.

Crawl under and look at the line, and connection and see if it is wet or damp with some type of fluid.

You need to make sure this leak isn't in the brakes. A Bronc that won't go is inconvient. A Bronc that won't stop is deadly.

The vent for the rear axle is much farther forward from the tank, and I can't see gear oil comming out of the vent, unless you parked upside-down.

Get under the truck and look. If everything is damp, here's a trick. Get a bottle of baby powder, and blow it all over the tank and everything that is , or looks to be leaking. Then hit the brakes a few times, and take a look. Shake the vehicle, and look under at the tank. You should be able to tell the location ov the leak. At least either tank/fuel lines or brake line.

Good Luck
